RALEIGH, N.C. – Ty Head had a three RBI night, Brandon Novy hit his first career home run, and Anderson Nance pitched 3.2 innings of scoreless baseball to earn his first save, as the trio of freshmen helped lead No. 13 State to a 7-2 win over Stanford Thursday Night from Doak Field.
The Wolfpack (33-16, 17-9) was held scoreless through the first four innings and trailing until a three-run fifth inning gave NC State the lead and didn't look back.
Ryan Marohn (7-3) earned his seventh victory of the season after pitching 5.1 innings, allowing just two runs on four hits with one walk and four strikeouts. After allowing a Stanford home run in the second, Marohn retired 10 straight batters before allowing a two-out run in the fifth. Stanford would not score again.
Josh Hogue had three hits on the night and scored a run. Head had two hits, including a three-run home run to turn a one-run game into a four-run cushion. Novy, who was inserted into the lineup last minute, went back to back with Head hitting his first Wolfpack home run 422 feet to center field. Justin DeCriscio hit a two-out triple to give NC State the lead and give him two RBIs.
Stanford used eight different pitchers in the contest. Ryan Speshyock (1-3) gets tagged with the loss after allowing three runs in his 1.2 innings of work. Joey Volchko started for the Cardinal and went two innings, allowing just one base runner before being pulled.
The Cardinal took the lead in the second with a solo home run. The visitors took a 2-0 lead in the top of the fifth after a double and a single.
Matt Heavner made it a one-run game after the Wolfpack put runners on first and third with nobody out. After a single from Novy, he went first to third on a Matt Ossenfort single through the left side to put himself in a scoring position. Hevner hit a sacrifice fly to score Novy and put the Pack on the board.
Continuing in the fifth, Hogue, with two outs, kept the inning alive with a single, bringing up Decriscio, who ripped a triple down the line, scoring two and putting the Wolfpack in front.
Stanford threatened in the sixth with two singles and only one out. Nance got a fly ball to right field for the second out. After falling behind 2-0 in the count against Rintaro Sasaki, Nance got Sasaki to strikeout on three straight pitches, ending the at-bat with a 98 MPH fastball.
A throwing error with two outs in the seventh kept the inning alive for the Wolfpack, allowing Head to come to the plate and hit his fifth home run of the game, doubling the lead and making it 6-2. Stanford made a pitching change, and on the very first pitch, Novy went deep for the seventh run of the game.
