BERKELEY, CA. - After going behind 6-0 early, NC State rallied for seven unanswered runs behind Anderson Nance's five shutout innings and Brayden Fraasman's go-ahead home run in the seventh to go on and win 7-6 to secure the series over California Friday night.
Â
Nance (6-1) came on in the bottom of the fifth inning after a lead off single off Wolfpack starting pitcher Heath Andrews. Nance would strand the runner on third after a stolen base and a wild pitch. That would be the last time the Golden Bears would have anyone on base for the rest of the game.
Â
Nance retired 15 straight batters, striking out six in a row at one point. He finished with seven strikeouts on the evening on 62 pitches to earn his sixth win of the season, leading the team.
Â
With one out in the top of the seventh, Fraasman, in a 0-2 count, got a hold of a pitch that he was able to send high and deep into the California sky down the left-field line over the wall for his eighth home run of the year which would end up being the winning run for NC State (26-12, 10-6).
Â
After being shutout last night, California (18-20, 6-14) took an early 1-0 lead in the second after a solo home run. They would add five runs in the bottom of the fourth after four straight singles and a three-run home run to make it 6-0.
Â
Andrews went four innings, allowing six runs on seven hits. He didn't walk any batters and struck out four.
Â
The Wolfpack didn't wait long to respond as they had a six-run inning of their own in the top of the fifth to tie the game. The first two Wolfpack batters reached before Matt Heavner started the scoring with an RBI single. Ty Head immediately followed with an RBI single of his own. The third single came from Chris McHugh to cut the deficit in half, and a Cal error allowed runners to move up a base.
Â
A wild pitch scored head, and Alex Sosa's fourth hit of the inning cut it back to a one-run game. Luke Nixon, who started the inning with a hit-by-pitch, came up again and singled to score Justin DeCriscio and tie the game.
Â
McHugh continues to pace the Wolfpack offense with a 3-4 for the night, adding to his team-leading 50 hits and 42 RBIs. Fraasman's home run was his eighth of the season, joining Hogue and DeCriscio for the team lead.
Â
This was the first win of the season for the Wolfpack when the game was tied after the sixth inning, and they are now 3-1 in one-run games this season. When the opponent scores first, NC State comes back 12 times this season, and it was the second time the Pack has come back after being down six runs.
Â
Up Next: The Wolfpack have won five ACC series this season and will attempt their first conference sweep tomorrow, April 19th, at 5 p.m. ET, broadcast on ACCNX.
