RALEIGH, NC – A 10-week, 30-game stretch of ACC play begins this week for NC State baseball as the Wolfpack take on Virginia Tech to open conference play starting on Friday, March 14th at 6 p.m. through Sunday, March 16th from Doak Field. The weekend series will be broadcast on ACCNX.
At 12-5 heading into conference games, NC State looks to continue their winning streak, currently at nine games. The Wolfpack is 11-2 at home this season and, over the course of the winning streak, have recorded four run-rule victories. NC State is 10-0 when scoring 10+ runs.
Against the Hokies, NC State holds a 50-24-2 record in the all-time series. Last year, the two teams met in the ACC tournament, with NC State victorious 19-9 (8). The previous ACC series between the two programs came in 2022, seeing the Hokies take two of three.
Virginia Tech last came to Raleigh for an ACC series in 2021 when NC State swept the series. The two teams first met in 1940 in the first year of NC State Baseball; 37 runs were scored in that game, with the Hokies winning 20-17. The Wolfpack's largest margin of victory came in 2006 when they beat Virginia Tech 21-3.
Wolfpack starting pitching looks to continue their impressive run of outings as the weekend rotation of Dominic Fritton, Heath Andrews, and Ryan Marohn have combined for a 7-3 record this season with 87 strikeouts and 22 walks.
Marohn was named ACC pitcher of the week for the first time in his career last time on the mound. The lefty from Chantilly, Va. put up nine scoreless innings, holding the Raiders to just four hits while walking just one and striking out a career high 14 batters. Marohn struck out nine straight batters between the sixth and ninth innings and 10 of the last 12 batters he faced.
After throwing a complete-game seven-inning shutout against Canisius, Marohn has now thrown 17 consecutive scoreless innings dating back to the fifth inning against Coastal Carolina in the Jacksonville Classic on February 23rd. It is the first Wolfpack nine-inning complete game since Matt Willadsen did it against UNC in 2022. He is the only pitcher in the country to have two complete games under his belt.
Several NC State bats have been producing during this win streak, with Chris McHugh leading the Wolfpack with a .452 average, 14 hits, and 15 RBIs over the last nine games. McHugh is fifth in the ACC and 32nd in the nation with 25 RBIs this season.
Luke Nixon has eight doubles this season, the second-best mark in the ACC heading into conference play. As a team, NC State has 43 on the season, the eighth-most in the country.
When in the lineup, Justin DeCriscio refuses to strikeout. He is 16th in the nation in the toughest to strikeout category. He has struck out just twice all season in 42 at-bats.
NC State has made sure to capitalize when the bases are loaded. The Wolfpack is 14-35 (.400) with the bases full as a team. McHugh is 4-4 in his opportunities, and Josh Hogue is 3-4 with a grand slam in the season. Overall, with runners in scoring position, NC State is hitting .324.
Derrick Smith made his season debut in the Wolfpack's win over NC A&T. Smith pitched one inning to close the game and secure the run-rule victory with three strikeouts, allowing just one hit.
