RALEIGH – NC State took care of business against Georgia Tech, 87-58, to improve to 2-0 in ACC play and win three straight to improve to 8-4 on the season. The Pack used large runs, including a 20-0 run between the third quarter and led by as many as 43 points in NC State's final home game of 25.
The Pack had six players in double figures led by Zamareya Jones' 17 behind 7-of-9 shooting from the field. NC State won the battle in points off turnovers (14-8), points in the paint (34-20), second chance points (5-2), fast breaks (17-14), bench points (32-8) and rebounds (44-31).
Jones scored eight of the Pack's first 10 points, going 4-of-4 from the field in the first, but GT started hot from beyond the arc by shooting 4-of-6 from 3-point. At the media timeout, GT took its lone lead of the game, 16-14, with 4:25 left in the first. Qadence Samuels and Maddie Cox made 3-pointers on back-to-back possessions and Jones delivered a layup to beat the buzzer, as the Pack led 26-20 after the first.
Jones and Destiny "Ky'She" Lunan knocked down triples to begin the second quarter, which began a 12-0 run for the Pack with a little over a minute left in the first to take a 12-point lead, 32-20. NC State made its next five field goals and charged on a 6-0 run in a little over a minute to lead 44-27 with 4:53 left in the half, forcing the Yellow Jackets to call a timeout. The Pack continued its run out of the timeout, extending it to a 10-0 one. NC State held GT in a 2:58 scoring drought to end the half and outscored the Yellow Jackets 29-11 in the quarter. NC State led 55-31 at the half, while shooting 66 percent.
A 3-pointer with 8:54 left in the third was the Yellow Jacket's lone basket in the quarter, as the Pack held GT to a scoring drought for the rest of the quarter and went on a 20-0 run to end the frame. The three points by GT marks the third fewest allowed in a quarter (since the game switched to quarters) and the fewest since 2017 when NC State held Old Dominion to three. NC State outscored GT 22-3 in the quarter with freshman Lunan leading the Pack with seven of its points. NC State led 77-34 after three.
GT outscored the Pack 12-4 in the first 5:10 of the fourth, but NC State still led by 43, 81-46, with 4:51 left in the game. Devyn Quigley started to find her stride, scoring five fourth quarter points. GT ended the game on a 6-0 run and outscored the Pack 24-10 in the fourth, but NC State won the contest, 87-58.
POSTGAME QUOTES
Head Coach Wes Moore
"I'm really proud of how we've been coming out the last few games, ready to play, and making a little bit of a statement early. I think in the first half, we had 15 assists and only three turnovers, which was great to see. We're getting everybody involved. I think we had six people in double figures, and Maddie Cox had seven. She was right there and doing a lot of good things. The fourth quarter got a little sloppy, but three of three quarters, I thought we played extremely well and had good momentum. Again, another road game coming up Sunday, a tough one. Davidson already took Baylor to overtime on a neutral court and a couple of years ago it won two out of three against ACC teams on the road and now we're going to their place. So not a very smart guy here, but one more to hopefully try to end on a good note before we send everybody home through the holidays."
