DAVIDSON, N.C. – The NC State women's basketball team used a hot start and strong finish to pull out a 68-59 road win at Davidson on Sunday. NC State started the game with a 23-5 lead and finished the contest on an 8-0 run to complete play in 2025 on a high note.
Zamareya Jones hit a huge 3-pointer with under a minute to go in the game, finishing with 19 points, while Khamil Pierre tallied her eighth double-double of the season with 23 points and 13 boards. NC State dominated in the paint, winning the battle, 42-22, while outrebounding the Wildcats 42-37.
NC started the game with a 12-2 lead, as Jones and Pierre contributed five points apiece in the opening 5.5 minutes. The Pack continued its run, extending it to a 16-0 one, as Pierre made back-to-back baskets. Davidson called a timeout with NC State ahead 18-2 with 2:10 left in the first. After holding the Wildcats in a scoring drought for over six minutes, Davidson found a basket, but Brooks responded as time expired in the first. The Pack opened the game with a 20-4 advantage, with the Wildcats' four points (on 10.5 percent shooting) marking the sixth lowest allowed in a quarter in school history.
Maddie Cox came off the bench and delivered a triple for the Pack, but Davidson responded with one of their own and then went on a 7-2 run. Jones then answered with a triple, but Davidson had another response with a 6-0 run to cut the lead to single digits, 28-19. NC State had back-to-back baskets including a turnaround jumper by Tilda Trygger, and before the break, Brooks delivered a driving layup, and the Pack led 34-22 at the half.Â
Jones made the first three points for the Pack in the second half, but Davidson got going offensively, as both sides exchanged a pair of baskets. Davidson shot 4-of-7 from beyond the arc in the third quarter and went on a 10-4 run in the beginning of the frame to cut the deficit to four, 43-39. Out of the timeout called by NC State with 3:27 left in the quarter, Pierre came up with a layup and a fadeaway jumper, but Davidson cut the deficit to three twice, including off another triple. Davidson outscored NC State 24-15 in the third, as NC State went into the final quarter up by three, 49-46.
In the fourth quarter, NC State scored four straight points, including a jumper from Brooks, who surpassed 1,000 career points on that bucket. NC State extended its lead to seven off Brooks free throws, but Davidson responded with back-to-back triples and a jumper by the Wildcats cut the deficit to one with less than four to play. Davidson made its 10th 3-pointer of the game to come within one point, but Pierre went to the line to make two free throws. WIth the shot clock winding down with under a minute to play and on a day NC State struggled to shoot the 3-pointer, Jones drained a huge triple to go back up by six, 65-59. The Pack forced a bad pass on the other end, a part of the Pack's 8-0 run to finish the game.
