WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – The NC State volleyball team dropped its midweek match at Wake Forest Wednesday evening in straight sets.
The Demon Deacons used a 6-0 scoring run to take a 7-2 lead over the Wolfpack to begin the match and force an early timeout to be used by head coach Megan Wargo-Kearney. A kill by freshman outside Rebecca Ring ended the Deacons scoring run and minimized the deficit to four (7-3).
The Wolfpack battled back to tie the opening frame 14-all, but Wake Forest regained a two-point lead after back-to-back errors by NC State. Senior middle blocker Lily Cropper tallied an ace to tie the set 17-all and force a Wake Forest timeout. After seven set points, the Demon Deacons ended up taking the first set, 32-30.
Ring and fellow outside hitter Courtney Bryant combined for 14 kills in the first set, with Bryant leading all scorers with eight.
The Demon Deacons wasted no time taking a 9-4 lead to kick off the second set, once again forcing an early timeout by Wargo-Kearney. Three freshmen dominated for the Pack throughout the second set – Ring, Hailey McFadden, and Sa'Mya Dorsey. NC State minimized the deficit to one (19-18), forcing Wake Forest to use a timeout with hopes of slowing the Wolfpack.
The Demon Deacons took the set, 25-23. Ring led all scorers with 12 kills and was hitting .391 through two frames to lead all hitters.
Wake Forest opened the third set by scoring five unanswered points, forcing Wargo-Kearney to use her earliest timeout of the evening. The Demon Deacons continued to dominate the third set, leading by as many as seven (20-13). Wake Forest would allow NC State to score five more points before taking the set, 25-18.
