
NC State Takes Home Win Over Cal 4-0

DURHAM, NC: No. 23 NC State men's tennis returned to Durham NC, Sunday Jan. 28 to take on the Cal Golden Bears in the Consolation match of the ITA Kickoff Weekend.
No. 8 Duke hosted NC State, Cal, and Middle Tennessee this weekend being one of fifteen sites across the country hosting in the annual ITA Kickoff Weekend. The Pack took on the Blue Devils Saturday, Jan. 27 taking a hard hit from fellow ACC opponent Duke facing defeat 4-0.
After a tough loss to the Blue Devils Saturday afternoon, the Wolfpack took advantage of another day to play and returned to Durham full steam ahead. NC State took home a victory against Cal in the consolation match in Durham early Sunday morning.
Statement from Head Coach Kyle Spencer:
"It was nice to finish off the weekend with a win over a very good Cal team. For us, we were very comprehensive in doubles today.We got off to a lot of really good start in singles I thought the guys really fought hard and competed for the tough points."
The Pack came out hot in a coast to coast face-off against the bears. All courts picked up a 4-3 lead over the bears in doubles, making the competition neck and neck for the doubles point.
No. 13 Joe Wayand, and Martin Borisiouk paved the way for the Pack defeating opponents Jonathan Irwanto and Alex Chang 6-4. Fons Van Sambeek and Braden Shick fell short in a close battle on court three leaving the doubles point in the hands of Robin Catry and Luca Staeheli. The pair gave the Pack a glimpse of hope fighting for victory in a 6-5 battle against opponents. Breaking away from the competition the pair secured the doubles point for the Pack winning 7-5.
Statement From Luca Staeheli on Doubles victory:
"It's always great to be back on the court with Robin. We've been in positions last year similar to today, where we were the last two on the court and I think we handled it really well."
Gaining a 1-0 lead, the Pack commanded the court in singles. No. 120 Robin Catry kept up the energy going in, controlling the court over opponent Carl Emil Overbeck winning 6-0, 6-1.
Following shortly behind Catry's victory was Luca Staeheli defeating opponent Jonathan Irwanto 6-2, 6-3, putting 3-0 up on the board for the Pack. Braden Shick wrapped it up for the Wolfpack pulling off a win over Cal opponent Timofey Stepanov 6-3,6-3.
Statement from Robin Catry:
"I'm glad that Luca and I have been able to hold up together. We put the other team under pressure and it totally paid off on match point. I'm glad that we won the match point after a tough one yesterday. For singles we came in with the right energy, when we keep the right energy, and not let anything come in the way it makes for better competition. Overall, It's bittersweet, but glad that we get to leave here with a win."
