RALEIGH – The NC State volleyball team recorded its first sweep of the season in the win over Winthrop Saturday evening. The win also marked the fourth straight match with the Wolfpack coming out on top.
The win moved the Pack to 5-1 on the season and marked head coach Luka Slabe's 45th win at the helm of the program.
Winthrop came out hot to start in set one, taking an early lead. NC State tied things 12 all before going on a 5-0 run to take the lead. Senior middle blocker Riley Shaak recorded the kill to give Pack set one.
The Wolfpack struggled to gain the lead early in set two, but went on another 5-0 run to take over. Winthrop managed to bring the set within three, forcing head coach Slabe to take a timeout. NC State went on to win the next point on a wild rally that had Skye Stokes and Ava Brizard scrambling to keep the ball in play. A block by Shaak and setter Kirsten McDaniel ended set two with the Pack leading 2-0.
Winthrop went on a 7-3 run to open the third set, forcing Slabe to take an early timeout for the Wolfpack. NC State came out of the timeout fired up and went on a five-point run to take the lead. The two teams battled back and forth, eventually tying the match 15-all. The Wolfpack proceeded to score eight consecutive points before Winthrop scored again. Senior libero Skye Stokes recorded three of her four service aces in the set. A service error by the Eagles followed by a kill by freshman Clara Vondran ended the match with the Pack on top.
Sophomore outside hitter Ava Brizard led the team with 14 kills in addition to nine digs and one block. McDaniel, a graduate setter, recorded 20 assists and seven digs in the outing. Shaak recorded six blocks and opposite Amanda Rice tallied five, in addition to eight kills.
