Pack Blows Past NJIT, Named Tournament Champions

PISCATAWAY, N.J. – NC State volleyball wrapped up action at the Rutgers 9/11 Memorial Tournament undefeated as the Pack took down NJIT, 3-0 (25-22, 25-17, 25-16) on Saturday afternoon inside of the Rutgers Athletic Center.
The Pack (5-4) earned its second sweep of the weekend and fourth sweep of the season. NC State was named the Rutgers 9/11 Memorial Tournament Champions while graduate student Melissa Evans was named Tournament MVP and to the All-Tournament Team alongside senior Jade Parchment.
Evans and Parchment tallied a match-high 13 kills, hitting .458 and .258, respectively. Freshman Jada Allen once again put up great numbers as she tallied eight kills in 11 swings for a season-high .636 hitting clip.
Freshman Maggie Jones posted a game- and season-best 41 assists with eight digs while graduate student Kaylee Frazier led the way defensively with 11 digs.
Set One (NC State 25, NJIT 22)
The Wolfpack opened the game on fire, jumping out to an early 4-0 lead but the Highlanders (1-7) responded with a 4-1 run to tie the game at five. The Pack reeled off a quick 3-0 run to create enough space to hold off NJIT the rest of the set. NC State hit .406 with 16 kills led by Allen going 4-of-5 on her attempts with a block.
Set Two (NC State 25, NJIT 17)
The second set was a tough battle until a little over the halfway point as there were 10 ties and four lead changes. The final tie came at 14 before the Pack caught fire, ending the set on an 11-3 run to take a commanding 2-0 lead. NC State recorded three of its six total service aces in the set by Evans, Jones and junior Hannah Reid.
Set Three (NC State 25, NJIT 16)
After a slow start, NC State found its rhythm as it went on a 4-0 run to take an 8-5 lead that it would not relinquish. The Pack tightened up to hold NJIT to a .107 hitting percentage, allowing only nine kills while forcing six errors. The Wolfpack recorded 18 kills in the set with a .378 hitting percentage led by Evans getting six kills in 10 swings.

NC State returns to Reynolds Coliseum for the ACC/SEC Challenge on Sept. 16 & 17. The Pack will take on Georgia at 7 p.m. on Thursday before battling Arkansas on Friday at 7 p.m.
