RALEIGH – No. 9 NC State baseball (13-3) dropped a tough midweek contest on Tuesday evening to Charlotte (9-8) at Doak Field at Dail Park. The Wolfpack faced an early 5-0 deficit and managed to knot the score in the fifth and eighth innings, but the 49ers managed to put two on base with one out in the ninth and score.

HOW IT HAPPENED
-The 49ers jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the second inning on three hits. With runners on via a walk and hit-by-pitch, Tate Pennington's two-out single to center field knocked in the first run. Following a walk to load the bases, back-to-back outfield hits from Carson Johnston and Dominic Pilolli scored a combined four runs.
-NC State cut its deficit to one in the third thanks to Jose Torres's three-run homer to left field and Devonte Brown's RBI fielder's choice with runners at the corners.
-Charlotte extended its lead to three in the fourth thanks to Pilolli's double to center field that brought in two runs after a pair of walks started the side.
-The Pack responded with two runs of its own in the bottom frame, making the score 7-6. Terrell Tatum drew a leadoff walk and advanced to third on Torres's single up the right field line, then a balk brought him across home plate. With Torres at second after the balk, Tyler McDonough drove him in with a double that landed just fair of the left field line.
-Luca Tresh tied it up in the fifth with a leadoff homer to center field.
-Charlotte regained its lead in the eighth when Todd Elwood led off the inning with a single to left field, advanced to second on a sac bunt, then scored on Patrick Wheeler's single to left field.
-Tresh managed to tally another timely hit in the bottom half of the eighth. After Austin Murr took first on a hit-by-pitch and stole second, Tresh's single to right field drove him in to knot the game again.
-In the ninth, an error and single put runners at third with one out for the 49ers, and a groundout by David McCabe to third scored what proved to be the game-winning run.

QUICK HITS
-Murr and McDonough extended their reached base streaks to 16, while Jonny Butler now owns a 12-game reached base streak.
-Torres led the team with a 2-for-4 outing along with two runs scored and three runs batted in. He turned in his sixth multi-hit performance and fourth multi-RBI outing of the year.
-For Torres and Tresh, Tuesday was the third time this season they have homered. It was additionally the eighth time this year the Pack has hit multiple home runs in a game.
