
Stephen Franken Claims Medalist Honors at Stitch Intercollegiate

CARY, N.C. – NC State men's golf senior Stephen Franken won a playoff hole to capture medalist honors of the Stitch Intercollegiate held at MacGregor Downs Country Club on Saturday.
The reigning ACC Player of the Year shot a three-under par 69 on Friday to sit in second place, one shot behind the leader after one round of play. The start of the second round was also held on Friday and Franken was two-under for the round when it was halted due to approaching bad weather.
The Raleigh native started Saturday's play trailing by one shot with eight holes to play. Franken finished out the round with five pars and three birdies to force a playoff with Wake Forest's Cameron Young.
Franken won the playoff which was played on the 18th Hole with a birdie. The win is the second of Franken's career and also gives him an exemption in the Web.Com Tour's Rex Hospital Open which will be held May 30-June 2 at The Country Club at Wakefield Plantation in Raleigh.
As a team, NC State finished in a tie for third-place at 11-under par. The Pack shot the best team round of the tournament in the second round at 14-under par. Wake Forest captured the team title at 14-under par for the tournament, edging first round leader Louisville by one shot. Liberty finished in a tie with the Pack for third at 11-under par.
Benjamin Shipp rocketed up the leaderboard on Saturday to finish in a tie for fifth place. The Duluth, Ga., native posted seven birdies in the final nine holes of the tournament to register a nine-under par 63 in the final round of the tournament. The 63 is the lowest individual round by an NC State player this season, ties for the second-lowest round in NC State history and is tied for the fourth-lowest round by an ACC player this season.
Easton Paxton finished in a tie for 15th place. The Riverton, Wyo., native shot a 71 and 72 in the two rounds to finish the tournament one-under par.
Harrison Rhoades was next for the Pack in a tie for 29th place. Rhoades shot a 74 and 72 to finish two-over par.
Justin Hood rounded out the NC State lineup in a tie for 57th place. Hood shot a 78 in the first round, but shot even-par in the second round to finish the tournament with a score of six-over par.
Competing as individuals, Nolan Mills Jr., finished in a tie for 53rd (+5), Thomas Deal finished in a tie for 57th place (+6) and Davis Richards finished in a tie for 74th place (+10).
