The NC State men's golf team closed its fall season with a second place at the Royal Oaks Intercollegiate held at Maridoe Golf Club in Carrollton, Texas.
The Pack was one of eight ranked teams in a loaded field. Defending national champion and top-ranked Oklahoma State won the event. The Pack held off sixth-ranked SMU by four shots for second place.
NC State had a strong showing as three members of the Pack's lineup finished in the top-20 of a 75-member individual field.
Defending ACC Player of the Year Stephen Franken led the Pack with a three day total of one-under par. Franken had his best round of the tournament in the second round as he shot a 64 to move into second place with one round left to play. The Raleigh native shot a four-over par 74 to fall to fifth place, but still registered his 16th career top-10 finish.
Junior Benjamin Shipp was next for the Pack with a tie for 12th place. Shipp led NC State with the team low round in the first and third round and finished with a final scorecard of 68-77-71—216.
Senior Harrison Rhoades finished in a tie for 18th place, two shots back of Shipp. Rhoades shot a two-under par 68 in the second round to help NC State stay ahead of the field for second place. He finished with a final scorecard of 75-68-75—218.
Sophomore Easton Paxton finished two shots back of Rhoades in a tie for 26th place. Paxton was consistent throughout the tournament as the Pack used his score in all three rounds. He finished with a scorecard of 73-73-74—220.
Junior Christian Salzer finished in a tie for 57th place. Salzer fired his best round of the tournament in the second round when he finished with a 73.
This was the final tournament of the fall season for the Pack. NC State won the Wolfpack Intercollegiate two weeks ago, took second in this tournament and also had a fourth place finish at the Maui Jim Intercollegiate in September. The Pack will take a few months off from competition before playing seven tournaments in the spring starting in February with the Sea Best Invitational in Ponte Vedra, Fla.
