RALEIGH – The NC State men's tennis team is set to take its first road trip of the 2018 season as it travels to Evanston, Ill. on Thursday for a 7 p.m. (EST) match at Northwestern and then heads to Minneapolis to take on Minnesota at 1 p.m. (EST) on Saturday.
"I'm excited for the guys," said head coach Kyle Spencer. "We had a good weekend where we had two tough matches to get us going. Northwestern and Minnesota are programs that we have a lot of respect for. I think the guys are really excited to get on the road and see how we handle things. It's always neat when you go on the road because you're a collective unit and there's a lot less distractions. We're excited."
SCOUTING THE WILDCATS:
Thursday's match will be the first action of the 2018 season for Northwestern. The Wildcats went 22-11 last season, with an impressive 15-2 home court record. After advancing to the Round of 32 at the NCAA Championships and then falling to No. 8 California, the Wildcats ended the 2017 dual season ranked 22nd in the nation.
The team returns five players from last season's roster and adds four freshmen. While not featured in the current team rankings, Northwestern received votes in the latest Oracle/ITA poll.
Northwestern holds a slight 5-4 edge in the all-time series between the two programs. The teams last met on Feb. 10, 2017 in Raleigh, with the Wildcats, ranked 7th nationally at the time, taking that match 6-1.
SCOUTING THE GOPHERS:
Saturday also marks Minnesota's 2018 opener. The Gophers posted an overall record of 17-11 last season and also ended 2017 competition in the final Oracle/ITA rankings, coming in at No. 39.
Minnesota boasts two ranked singles players in No. 35 Stefan Milicevic and No. 73 Matic Spec and has the 26th-ranked doubles tandem made up of 2017 All-Big Ten honorees Spec and Felix Corwin.
Through just three previous meetings, NC State leads the series with Minnesota 2-1. The Wolfpack won 5-2 when the squads last matched up on Feb. 11, 2017 in Raleigh.
LAST TIME OUT:
NC State is 2-0 coming off of its opening weekend of competition having earned wins over Big South opponents Gardner-Webb and Winthrop at home. The Wolfpack won five of six singles matches to defeat Gardner-Webb 5-2 and then went on to complete the 7-0 sweep over Winthrop.
