NC State Picks Up Pair Of Wins In Season Opener

RALEIGH – The NC State men's tennis team opened its 2018 season and head coach Kyle Spencer's NC State career with wins against Gardner-Webb and Winthrop Saturday at the J.W. Isenhour Tennis Center.
"For some of us, including myself and Cris (James), it was our first time being indoors here and being on the staff at NC State, so that was great, and for the new guys it was fantastic," said Spencer. "Obviously, you always want to compete well in these matches with two quality programs that are going to challenge for their conference title, and I thought the guys did a good job. There were obviously some nerves and some butterflies in different areas, but we had an overall great team chemistry and a great crowd today. We had great crowd support from the fans, which is always nice to see."
NC STATE 5, GARDNER WEBB 2
The Wolfpack faced an uphill battle after dropping the doubles decision. Igor Saveljic and Ivan Saveljic got things started by cruising to a 6-2 win over Gardner-Webb's Paul Hogan and Johan Fors on court one. Adam Schmidt and Millen Hurrion picked up a win for the Runnin' Bulldogs on court three, beating Wolfpack freshmen Tadas Babelis and Robert Turzak 6-3.
The doubles point came down to a tight match on court two between NC State's Georgiy Malyshev and Michael Ogden and Gardner-Webb's Breno Plentz and Maximilian Scholl. After neither pair dropped serve, Plentz and Scholl barely edged Malyshev and Ogden 7-5 in a tiebreaker to give the Runnin' Bulldogs a 1-0 lead in the match.
Malyshev got things going for the Wolfpack in singles. He breezed past Gardner-Webb's Hogan 6-3, 6-2 on court three to even the match score at 1-1.
On court four, Ivan swung the match in favor of the Wolfpack with his 7-5, 6-2 win against Plentz.
Babelis added a victory of his own, the first of his NC State career, to put the Wolfpack up 3-1. The Wolfpack freshman won the first set 6-4, dropped the second set 6-1, and then surged back to take the third set 6-3.
Gardner-Webb drew back within one after 105th-ranked Scholl outlasted Igor in three sets for the 7-6 (4), 1-6, 6-3 win, but the Wolfpack went on to win the last two matches of the outing.
In his first day of competition as a member of the Wolfpack, Turzak clinched the match for NC State with a 6-2, 6-3 win over Fors, and Ogden came from behind to beat Gardner-Webb's Ross Gilbert 3-6, 6-1, 1-0 (4) to put the final match score at 5-2.
NC STATE 7, WINTHROP 0
The Wolfpack got off to a quick start in its afternoon match and never slowed down. Babelis and Malyshev paired up for doubles on court two. The duo started their match with a break and didn't look back on the way to defeating Winthrop's Connor Williamson and Joshua Ryan 6-1.
Moments later, Ogden and Collin Shick picked up a 6-4 win over Gabriel Dias and Tremayne Mitchell on court three. Their win sealed the doubles point and halted Igor and Ivan's match against No. 42 Diego Quiroz and Ruy Teixeira at 4-4.
Malyshev took a quick 6-0, 6-3 decision against Winthrop's Mitchell on court four, and Igor followed suit shortly after on court one, beating Quiroz 6-3, 6-2.
Ivan secured the Wolfpack's second singles victory of the day as he bested Connor Williamson 7-5, 6-1 on court three, and Babelis handled yet another three-set battle in a 6-0, 6-7 (2), 6-3 win over Ruy Teixeira on court two.
After winning the first set 7-5, Ogden dominated to win the second frame 6-1 against Winthrop's Joshua Ryan before Turzak put an exclamation point on the Wolfpack's day.
After dropping the first set 6-3, Turzak powered through a 7-5 second set win to force a third-set tiebreaker, which he won 12-10 to complete NC State's 7-0 sweep of the Eagles.
UP NEXT
NC State hits the road for a pair of matches at Northwestern and Minnesota. The Wolfpack visits Northwestern on Thursday, Jan. 18 at 7 p.m. and then heads to face Minnesota on Saturday, Jan. 20 at 1 p.m.

Babelis added a victory of his own, the first of his NC State career, to put the Wolfpack up 3-1. The Wolfpack freshman won the first set 6-4, dropped the second set 6-1, and then surged back to take the third set 6-3.
