RALEIGH, N.C. - The 10th-ranked NC State wrestling team will compete in a road dual for the first time this season, as the Wolfpack (3-1) travels to Norfolk, Va., to take on Old Dominion Tuesday night at 7 p.m.
Â
Quick Takedowns
• NC State and Old Dominion are meeting for the third straight season. In 2015, the Pack won at ODU 21-15, and last season NC State won in Raleigh 26-15. In the last two duals, the two teams have both notched 10 individual wins, but the Pack used six bonus point wins to secure each dual, including four last year.
• In this week's FloWrestling rankings, four Wolfpack starters are ranked in the top-20 while ODU has three.
• For the seventh consecutive week to open the 2016-17 season, NC State is ranked in the top-10 in the USA Today/NWCA Wrestling Coaches poll. This week, NC State is ranked No. 10, after being ranked No. 9 the first six polls.
• With a 3-1 start in duals in 2016-17, NC State has won 26 of its last 28 duals dating back to the beginning of last season (23-1 last year). Over the last two seasons, the Pack is a perfect 7-0 in road duals, four wins over ranked foes.
• Over the last two seasons, NC State is 10-2 against ranked opponents, including 5-0 away from Raleigh.
• The Appalachian State dual (Nov. 30) marked the first time NC State competed in Reynolds Coliseum in 646 days (Feb. 22, 2015). Reynolds was closed last season, undergoing a $35 million renovation.
New Faces, New Places
NC State only graduated two seniors off of last year's squad that placed 11th at the NCAAs, but the dual lineup has seen a lot more changes. In the Pack's probable lineup for the Old Dominion dual, Kevin Jack (141) stands as the only starter from last year wrestling at the same weight. In fact, of the Pack's 10 current probable starters, only three finished last year as a starter (Jack, Sean Fausz, Michael Boykin).
A duo of NCAA Qualifiers both changed weight classes in the offseason - Sean Fausz (133) and Michael Boykin (285). The Pack has also added three veteran grapplers who redshirted last season make their way into the current probable lineup - Sam Speno (149), Brian Hamann (165) and Michael Macchiavello (184).
In addition, a trio of true freshmen broke into the lineup - Tommy Cox (125), Thomas Bullard (157), and Nick Reenan (174). Finally, Malik McDonald (197) was a backup in his weight class last year.
About Old Dominion
After a 25th place finish at last year's NCAA Championships, ODU sits at 1-3 in duals this season, but have not competed since Nov. 29. The Monarchs defeated conference foe Northern Illinois last time out, 22-9.
