Brian Brown worked a career-long seven innings, but a seemingly harmless pop-up to shallow right center proved the difference, as No. 8 Florida State edged the Pack 1-0 on Friday at Doak Field at Dail Park.
Over the last three outings, Wolfpack (18-11, 6-7 ACC) starting pitching brandishes a 1.40 ERA through 19 1/3 innings, allowing just three earned with 24 strikeouts. Brown (3-2) became the second starter in a row saddled with a tough-luck loss, going seven-plus with one run allowed on five hits with six punchouts. Curt Britt worked the last two frames, holding the Seminoles (25-7, 11-3) scoreless on two hits with one strikeout.
Logan Ratledge extended his team-leading hitting streak to 12 games, finishing 1-for-4 with a double. Joe Dunand doubled in a 1-for-3 effort. Andrew Knizner and Jake Armstrong provided the Pack's other two hits. Knizner threw out a pair of runners on the basepaths, improving to 9-for-18 on gunning down attempted basestealers this season.
The play of the game came with a runner at first and two away in the top first. A pop to shallow right found a landing strip between three converging fielders. The throw home was on the money but a touch late, allowing the Noles to score the game's only run.
NC State returns to action on Saturday for the series finale at 2 PM, streaming on ESPN3. Radio duties will be handled by 88.1 WKNC. Fans can also follow along with live stats from GoPack.com, or Twitter updates via @NCStateBaseball.
