NC State dropped the first of a three-game series at No. 22 North Carolina, 2-1 on Friday night at Boshamer Stadium.
The Wolfpack (19-13, 7-8 ACC) fell behind 1-0 in the third on an RBI single to left, scoring a runner who reaced on a leadoff walk and stole second. State rallied to tie the Tar Heels (21-13, 8-8) in the sixth when Ryne Willard broke up a tag at first to score Logan Ratledge from third. Skye Bolt's solo shot to right center represented only the third hit of the evening for the home team, enough to escape with a 2-1 victory.
Six of the nine Pack batters contributed a hit on the night, but none provided more than one. Ratledge scored the lone run in a 1-for-4 outing, extending his team-leading hitting streak to 15 games, the longest for an NC State hitter this season. Joel McKeithan contributed the Wolfpack's only extra-base hit, a double in the third.
Cory Wilder battled admirably through a rocky 5 2/3 innings, holding the Heels to one earned on two hits with seven punchouts and six walks. Joe O'Donnell (4-2) ended up with the loss after giving up the homer in 1 2/3, his only hit allowed. Will Gilbert held North Carolina hitless for the final 2/3 with one walk.
