Four Advance to Finals on First Day of NCAA Regional

GREENSBORO, N.C. – The NC State track and field team saw two throwers, one jumper and a distance runner advance to the finals of the 2013 NCAA Championships Thursday at the Irwin Belk Track on the campus of North Carolina A&T University.
Facing yet another high-pressure task, senior Karimah Shepherd came through in the clutch in the women’s long jump on her sixth and final attempt. After five jumps, Shepherd ranked 14th overall and needed to climb at least two spots in the standings to advance to the finals.
It was then that the 2013 ACC Champion took flight with a monster 20’ 3.25” (6.19m) leap into the sand pit to move into fourth place and clinch a spot in the final round, which will take place June 5-8 in Eugene, Ore., at the University of Oregon.
The Wolfpack also had a pair of throwers advance to the finals when redshirt junior Nathaniel Williams recorded his second-best throw of the season in the men’s discus with a 182’ 6.00” (55.64m) measurement to finish in eighth place. Redshirt freshman and 2013 All-ACC performer SeQuoia Watkins placed 10th in the women’s discus with a 163’ 9.00” (49.91m) heave to punch her ticket to Eugene.
In the women’s 10,000-meter race, sophomore Joanna Thompson finished in 12th place after crossing the finish line with a time of 33:49.22 – taking the final qualifying spot and advancing on to Oregon. Redshirt senior Andie Cozzarelli, a two-time All-American in the event, finished right behind Thompson in 13th place at 33:53.94, just missing the cut in her final collegiate 10K race.
Competing in his final NCAA Regional, redshirt senior Ryan Hill did exactly what he needed to do in the men’s 1,500-meter race by finishing in third place after clocking a 3:47.60 mark. Hill’s performance earned him a place in Saturday’s semifinals, which is scheduled to start at 6:45 p.m.
Competition will resume Friday, May 24, with the women’s hammer throw beginning at 10 a.m.
