
Shepherd Takes Second in Long Jump at Florida Relays

RALEIGH, N.C. – Senior jumper Karimah Shepherd took second place in the women’s long jump at the Florida Relays in Gainesville, Fla., as the NC State track & field team completed its first day of competition at the University of Florida and the Duke Invitational Friday.
Shepherd leaped 20’ 0.25” (6.10m), which was her second-best mark so far this season. The Chesapeake, Va., native recorded a jump that was seven inches longer at last weekend’s Raleigh Relays.
At the Duke Invitational in Durham, N.C., the Wolfpack received a top-five performance from senior Erin Mercer in the women’s 1,500-meter run, where she turned in a season-best 4:31.37 mark. Redshirt junior Samantha Norman posted a top-10 finish in the race, crossing the finish line in 4:34.52 to take ninth place.
The Pack received a pair of top-five finishes in the men’s and women’s throws, as redshirt sophomore Jule Rich placed fifth in the men’s hammer throw at 173’ 7.00” (52.92m) and redshirt freshman Nicole Chavis took fifth on the women’s side with a 166’ 11.00” (50.88m) heave.
NC State will compete in the final day of action of the Duke Invitational and the Florida Relays Saturday, April 6.
