Freshman Malone Wins Triple Jump For Pack Men

BLACKSBURG, Va. – N.C. State freshman Rueben Malone of Lillington, N.C., won the triple jump in his first collegiate meet on Friday night at the season-opening Virginia Tech Invitational at Rector Field House.
Malone, with a personal-best leap of 50-feet, 11-inches, edged junior teammate Kwame Boatwright of Durham, N.C., who came in second with a mark of 49-feet, 2-inches. Freshman Carl Marant of Raleigh, also competing in his first collegiate meet, was 10th.
In the opening events of the two-day meet, the Wolfpack excelled in the jumps and throws.
Wolfpack junior Karimah Shepherd hit a personal-best mark of 40-feet, 2 ¼-inches to finish fifth in the women’s triple jump.
In the women's weight throw, NC State took three of the top seven spots, as senior Lawanda Henry of Dunn, N.C., took second place with a throw of 61-feet, 4 ¾-inches, followed by redshirt freshman Kortney Pearce of Willow Spring, N.C., in third place and redshirt freshman Tremanisha Taylor of Henderson, N.C., in seventh.
In the men’s weight throw, junior Grant Pearce was second with a personal-best toss of 58-feet, 10 ¾-inches. Redshirt freshman Nathaniel Williams was fourth at 57-feet, 5 ½-inches and redshirt freshman Jule Rich was sixth at 53-feet, 8 ¼-inches.
In the running events, redshirt freshman Michael Mansy of Johnson City, Tenn., was fifth in the mile with a time of 4:18.56.
The second day of action begins at 11 a.m. for the field events and at 12:15 for the running events. Live results are available throughout the day here.
