First Round Results
NEW LONDON, N.C. – No. 25 NC State is tied for sixth after the first round of the ACC Men’s Golf Championship at Old North State Club.
The Wolfpack fired a team score of 7-over 295 and is tied with No. 22 Virginia after the first of three rounds. Sixth-ranked Georgia Tech leads the field at 7-under 281, eight shots ahead of No. 16 Duke. Clemson is a shot in back of the Blue Devils for third.
Freshman Albin Choi is tied for fifth after shooting a 2-under 70 in his first career round at the ACC Championship. Choi had four birdies on his round today – two on each set of nine holes – and is just two shots out of the lead. He played -3 over the final 12 holes after two early bogeys in the first six holes.
Sophomore Mitchell Sutton fired a 1-over 73 to tie for 14th. He birdied No. 1 and 14 to highlight his day.
Junior Chad Day had a good showing on day one, finishing tied for 20th at 2-over 74. He recorded two birdies on the back nine, including one at the par-5 18th.
Junior Mark McMillen is tied for 45th after a round of 6-over 78. All seemed fine with his round with seven-consecutive pars to start, but after a double bogey at hole 8, he followed with five back-nine bogeys. He did however finish with birdie like Day to end on a positive note.
Senior Brandon Detweiler is tied for 49th after a 7-over 79. He ran into trouble on the front nine with a 41, but rallied on the back with just a double bogey at 16 as the only blemish over the final 11 holes.
Georgia Tech’s Paul Haley and Kyle Scott both fired rounds of 4-under 68 to lead a field of 55 competitors.
Second round action continues Saturday at 8 a.m. Admission is free, while live stats are available at golfstat.com. NC State will tee off from 8:40-9:20 a.m., with North Carolina and Virginia Tech.
