COLLEGE PARK, MD. - No. 56 NC State took the doubles point to open, but 48th-ranked Maryland stormed back with wins in four of the next five singles matches to hold off the Pack for a 4-3 win.
Jaime Pulgar highlighted NC State’s afternoon with his 6-7 (6-8), 6-2, 6-3 upset of 109th-ranked Maros Horny in singles competition. Pulgar continues a hot streak after defeating 50th-ranked Luka Somen last weekend at Virginia Tech.
Maryland (11-10, 3-7 ACC) landed the first punch as Maros Horny and John Collins notched the first doubles win, 8-4, over NC State’s Jaime Pulgar and Dave Thomson.
The Pack (9-13, 1-9 ACC) rallied with wins in the next two doubles contests. Rob Lowe and Dominic Hodgson claimed an 8-5 decision against Andy Magee and Jesse Kiuru. David Chermak teamed with Julian Sullivan to clinch the doubles point in a 9-8 (7-5) thriller against tommy Laine and Mathias Sarrazin.
NC State managed two wins in singles play. Pulgar’s ranked win capped the afternoon, while Ivan Sanchez Gomez dispatched Sergio Wyss 6-2, 6-3 in the number three position.
The Pack dropped three separate three-set matches, any of which could have swung the tide in NC State’s favor. Dominic Hodgson fell 6-3, 4-6, 6-3 at number two, Dave Thomson came up short in a 3-6, 6-3, 6-4 match at number six, and Julian Sullivan suffered a 4-6, 7-5, 6-2 defeat at five.
NC State returns to the courts Sunday at 11 a.m. in Chestnut Hill, Mass., as the Pack takes on Boston College to wrap up the regular season.
