COOKEVILLE, Tenn. - NC State softball dropped a nine inning contest to Louisville by a score of 3-2 today in Cookeville, Tenn. in the Pack's first game of the Combat Classic.

Alyssa Allbritten went 1-for-2 for the Wolfpack, driving in the squad's two runs.

NC State (7-8) got on the board in the third inning, catalyzed by a leadoff single by senior Alicia Abbott. One batter later, Alyssa Ishibashi laced a double, moving Samantha Melton, pinch running for Abbott, to third. With two outs, Alyssa Allbritten notched a two-RBI base hit that plated Melton and Ishibashi, giving the Pack a 2-0 lead over Louisville.

Kayla Cox, the Pack's starter in the circle, held Louisville hitless through 5 1/3 innings before giving up a double to Katie Keller in the top of the sixth. The next batter, Chelsea Bemis, took advantage of the strong wind gusts blowing out to knock a homerun over the right field wall, tying the game at 2-2.

Cox retired the Cardinals in order in the seventh inning, setting the table for the Pack offense to win the game in the bottom half of the frame.

Landon Warren doubled with one out in the seventh and was moved to third by Abbott. Tate, though, flew out to end the frame, forcing the game into extra innings.

In the Louisville half of the eighth inning, the runner placed on second advanced to third thanks to a sacrifice bunt. The next better, Bemis, walked, but was caught stealing on a perfect throw by Allbritten for the second out. Cox then struck out the next batter to end the inning, with the score still tied at 2-2.

Chelsea Tate was placed at second base for the Pack in the eighth, but was unable to advance, so after eight innings, the score remained 2-2.

The Cardinals pulled ahead 3-2 in the top of the ninth inning thanks to a sacrifice bunt and single up the middle.

The Pack returns to action tonight at 5 p.m. in Cookeville, Tenn., taking on Tennessee Tech.
