RALEIGH, N.C. – NC State topped Longwood 7-1 to win its own Wolfpack Challenge on Sunday, March 7 at the Curtis & Jacqueline Dail Softball Stadium. Bridget Desbois was named tournament MVP after making several phenomenal defensive plays and hitting .545 throughout the weekend.
Lindsay Campana and Landon Warren were also named to the all-tournament team in addition to Desbois.
The win moves the Wolfpack to 12-8 on the year, while the Lancers fall to 9-7.
Lindsay Campana (8-2) struck out 10 and didn’t allow any earned runs to the Lancers, who had put up 23 runs in its previous three outings. Brittany Spencer (0-3) took the loss.
A Spencer wild pitch allowed the Pack to take a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second. Stephanie Call drew a leadoff walk, and Krystal Hawkins came on to run in her place. Hawkins then took second on a Desbois sac-bunt and third on a passed ball, before coming in on Spencer’s errant delivery to the plate.
Longwood threatened in the top of the third but didn’t cash in. Kami Nuckols singled and moved to third when Maggie Margadonna lined a two-out base hit into the left-center alley, but Campana got a groundout from Brooke Short to end the inning.
The Wolfpack defense flashed some serious leather in the top of the fourth, quashing a potentially dangerous situation. With runners on second and third and nobody out, Campana induced three groundouts to escape without any damage.
NC State blew it open on three hits and two Longwood errors in a five-run fourth inning. Toni Ann Williford and Alyssa Ishibashi both laced two-run doubles into the outfield grass, and Ishibashi scored from second when Alyssa Allbritten reached on a poor throw from shortstop Ashley Kramer.
Longwood got a run in the top of the sixth when Allbritten attempted to pick Amy Betterton off at third and her throw bounced off the base runner.
Allbritten later extended the Pack’s lead to 7-1 with a solo jack in the bottom of the sixth.
NC State will play two games at Campbell this coming Wednesday, March 10, beginning at 4 p.m.
