RALEIGH, N.C. – A four-run bottom of the sixth lifted NC State (17-13 / 1-2 ACC) past Virginia Tech (9-17 / 2-1 ACC), 4-3, on Sunday, March 21 at the Curtis & Jacqueline Dail Softball Stadium.
Toni Ann Williford and Landon Warren both recorded two hits for the Wolfpack, while Lindsay Campana (11-5) struck out eight in picking up the complete-game decision.
Kenzie Roark (3-10) took the loss for the Hokies. Jasmin Harrell tossed the final inning for Virginia Tech.
The Pack had its first scoring opportunity in the bottom of the third as Williford and Warren reached on consecutive singles, but both were left stranded.
Courtney Liddle lined a two-run shot to left in the top of the fifth, giving VT a 2-0 lead late in the ball game.
VT threatened to increase its lead in the top of the sixth, putting runners on second and third with one out, but Campana struck out Whitney Davis and Kristina Cruz to get out of the jam.
The Pack turned things around and used three hits and a Hokie error to put up four runs and take control of the ball game in the bottom of the sixth. Claudia Cooper and Stephanie Call both singled, and Breanna Andrews followed with a clutch RBI double. VT then lifted Roark for Harrell, who hit Caitlin Dent on the arm with her second pitch to load the bases. Williford followed with a one-out sac-fly to deep center, scoring Call to knot the score at 2-all. Warren then walked to load the bases.
Lauren Peters followed with a fielder’s choice to third in the next at-bat, pushing Andrews across the plate, and pinch runner Katie Mansilla scored from second base on an errant throw to give NC State the lead for good.
Kristin Graham made it 4-3 with an RBI double down the line in left in the top of the seventh, but Campana got a fly ball to center from Kristen Froehlich to end the afternoon.
NC State will play a midweek doubleheader at UNC Greensboro on Thursday, March 25, before continuing conference action next weekend at North Carolina.
