GREENSBORO, N.C. – NC State softball spilt a doubleheader at UNC Greensboro on Thursday, March 25, taking the first game 10-0 in five innings before dropping the second contest 5-1.
The Wolfpack now stands at 18-14 on the year, while the Spartans sit at 13-15.
Lindsay Campana (12-5) allowed just one hit and the NC State offense pounded out 11 in 10-0 five-inning win to get the doubleheader started. Cory Mattson (7-7) lasted just one inning in the loss.
Kristine Bechtholdt and Allison Presnell both went deep, with Bechtholdt recording three RBIs and Presnell adding two. Stephanie Call went 3-for-4 at the plate and drove in two runs, while Alyssa Allbritten and Claudia Cooper each supplied a pair of hits and an RBI.
The Pack exploded to a near-instant 6-0 lead in the top of the first, plating all of its runs before recording its second out. Landon Warren singled, Presnell reached on an Emily Akiyma throwing error and Cooper singled. Call followed with a two-run base hit, and a third run scored when Allbritten skied a fly ball to right and Jordan Jewett dropped it.
Bechtholdt followed the Spartan’s second error of the inning with her third dinger of the season, clearing the bases and pushing the Pack’s lead to 6-zip.
UNC Greensboro didn’t waste much time changing things up, as the Spartans yanked Mattson in favor of Raeanne Hanks to start the second. Hanks pitched the rest of the way.
Allbritten tacked a run on with an RBI single to move it to 7-0 in the top of the seventh. Presnell roped a single, Cooper took a pitch to the leg and Call reached on a Katilin Merkt fielding error at short. Allbritten followed by smashing a single off of Hanks’ leg.
NC State’s lead increased to 9-0 with two more runs in the top of the third, as Presnell cracked a sac-fly near the warning track in center and Cooper scooted an RBI single through the left side. Presnell added the final blow in the top of the seventh with a solo shot, her second on the year, over the fence in right. Bechtholdt was robbed of a grand slam to end the inning when Brittany Ausley leapt on the warning track and made an incredible extended grab above the wall in left.
The Pack dropped the second affair 5-1. Call (5-4) suffered the loss as Amber Harrell (4-7) picked up the decision.
NC State scored in the top of the first as Warren walked, stole second and scored on a Call fielder’s choice back to the circle when Harrell threw the ball away.
UNC Greensboro knotted the score at 1-1 in the bottom of the second as Eileen Horsmon hustled to score from second when Ausley beat out an infield single to short.
Akiyama put the Spartans ahead 2-1 with a solo shot over the wall in left in the bottom of the third.
The Spartans plated three more in the box of the sixth, pushing the score to 5-1. Katie Stripling reached on an RBI single and Heather Robb scored on an errant relay throw from second. A final run later crossed on a wild pitch.
NC State will play a three game ACC set at North Carolina in Chapel Hill this weekend.
