ROCK HILL, S.C. – Stephanie Call won her fourth-straight start in the circle and went 3-for-4 at the plate with a home run and two RBIs as NC State topped North Carolina A&T, 5-4, in its second game at the Winthrop/adidas Invitational on Saturday, March 13.
The win pushes the Wolfpack to 15-9 on the year, while the Aggies dip to 8-4.
Call (5-1) struck out eight in the win, while Sasha Philpot (4-2) took the loss.
Ryanne Hill went 3-for-4 for NC A&T, driving in all four Aggie runs.
NC State got a quick run in the top of the first as Landon Warren drew a leadoff walk and took second on a Toni Ann Williford sac-bunt. Alyssa Allbritten then grounded out to third, but Warren was able to score when the Aggies attempted to make a play at third base and Bianca Alsobrook threw the ball away.
Bridget Desbois increased the Pack’s lead to 3-0 with a two-run base hit that lined off of second baseman Lillian Bullock’s glove in the top of the third.
Hill blasted a two-run shot in the bottom of the third, shrinking the Pack’s lead to 3-2.
NC State added a run in the top of the fifth. Williford stroked a double and took third on an Allbritten groundout. Williford then scored when Call nailed a base hit back into the circle, striking Philpot in the leg.
Hill came through again for the Aggies in the bottom of the fifth, knotting the game at 4-all with a two-run single up the middle.
But Call put the Wolfpack on her shoulders in the top of the seventh, belting her team-leading ninth homer of the season to give NC State a 5-4 advantage for good.
NC State will take on North Florida (1 p.m.) and Winthrop (3 p.m.) tomorrow, Sunday, March 14.
