
Wolfpack Women's Tennis Trumps East Carolina, 6-1

RALEIGH, N.C. - The NC State women's tennis team defeated visiting East Carolina, 6-1, on Saturday Feb. 11, at the J.W. Isenhour Tennis Center on the NC State campus. In the first of two matches on the day, the Pack collected all doubles and five singles wins en route to the team victory. NC State now stands at 5-0 in the spring, while ECU dips to 6-3.
The Pack took an early 1-0 advantage after winning all three doubles bouts. Senior Nandita Chandrasekar and sophomore Elin Stahl Johansson finished first at No. 2, blowing past Anca Dumitru and Alex Smith, 8-1, while freshman Shona Lee, making her debut for the Pack, and sophomore Julia Roach knocked off Luiza Borges and Mireia Gol, 8-2, at No. 3. At No. 1, senior Barbara Orlay and freshman Alejandra Guerra collected their third doubles win of the spring, downing Gillie Bailey and Kirstin Buchanan, 8-6.
Orlay, currently ranked No. 90 nationally in singles play by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA), started the Pack off with a solo win at No. 1, shutting out Dumitru, 6-0, 6-0, while Guerra dusted off Borges at No. 4, 6-1, 6-3. Chandrasekar suffered the Pack's first singles loss of the season at No. 3, falling to Gol, 6-3, 6-3. At No. 4, Lee clinched NC State's fifth victory of the season in her first collegiate singles match, downing Bailey, 6-1, 7-5, in her debut at No. 2.
Freshman Neils Barringer recorded her first career shutout win at No. 6 over Buchanan, 6-0, 6-0, while Roach won at No. 5 over Hannah Priest, 6-4, 6-1.
The NC State women's tennis team will return to action later today at the J.W. Isenhour Tennis on the NC State campus. The Pack will host the Elon Phoenix at 6 p.m.
