RALEIGH, N.C. - The outcome went down to the final bout, the final buzzer, of the evening, with heavyweight Jainor Palma's 3-2 decision over 13th-ranked Tyler Shovlin giving NC State a 22-17 dual-match victory Wednesday evening over UNC Greensboro in college wrestling action at Reynolds Coliseum.
NC State carried a 19-17 lead in the match heading into the heavyweight match, and Palma took a 3-1 lead into the final period. Shovlin started on the bottom and escaped to trim the lead to 3-2. The two traded shots over the final moments of the bout, when Shovlin caught Palma near the edge of the mat as time was about to expire. The buzzer went off a split second before Shovlin could get Palma in his grasp, and the Wolfpack escaped with a much-needed win.
The victory lifted NC State to 8-4-1 in dual matches, while UNCG dropped to 9-2.
"Our guys really fought hard, even the guys that lost, and that's all a coach can ask for," Wolfpack coach Carter Jordan. "It was a big win for us against a really solid wrestling team. They're ranked very high in the Atlantic Region."
The bout started at 125, and Jeremy Hartrum got the Wolfpack off to a quick start with a pin of Justin Walp at the 4:20 mark, giving NC State a 6-3 lead. UNCG wiped that lead out and took a 9-6 lead after Chris Bencivenga took a 9-6 decision over Garrett Cummings at 133 and 17th-ranked Kevin Artis pinned Jalil Dozier at 3:19 at 141.
Freshman 149-pounder Joe Caramanica pulled the Wolfpack to a 9-9 tie with an 8-5 deciison over Cody Harrington, and Kody Hamrah's 11-1 major decision over Nathan Berryman gave the Wolfpack a 13-9 lead.
Obie Simpson almost put the match away at 165, taking a 6-4 lead into the final seconds, but Mark Ring got an escape with three seconds left on the clock and received a point for advantage time to tie the match at 6-6 and sent it into overtime. Ring took Simpson down midway through the one-minute extra period for an 8-6 sudden-victory decision.
Ring's victory cut the lead to a point at 13-12, and Joe Lowe, who entered the 174-pound match with a 16-2 record, held a 4-2 lead over Rick Brownlee as that bout entered the final 30 seconds. In a flash, Brownlee took Ring down and rolled him for a three-point near fall to lock up a 7-5 decision that pushed the lead back to four points at 16-12.
"The turning point of the match was 174 pounds," Jordan said. "For Rick to get those five points in a matter of seconds like that right at the end of the bout was just huge. If they win that one, they take a two-point lead into the last three bouts and a four-point lead into the heavyweight match. Those five points made all the difference."
Jeremy Colbert made it 19-12 with a relatively uneventful 5-1 decision over Kane Smith at 184, but 13th-ranked Darin Burns got a technical fall over Mark Jahad to cut the lead to two points at 19-17 heading into the Palma Shovlin showdown.
Notes: Caramanica lifted his record to 20-6 on the season with his victory over Harrington, making him the first NC State freshman to win 20 matches in a season since Tommy Davis went 20-8 in 1997-98.
