Navy Wrestlers Shut Out NC State, 38-0

ANNAPOLIS, Md. - At least NC State did not go down without company. The 19th-ranked Navy wrestling team won 19 of 20 matches and cruised to a pair of dual-meet victories over ACC opponents NC State and North Carolina on Saturday afternoon.
Navy shut out NC State 38-0, and while it was little consolation, the midshipmen then throttled North Carolina 41-4. The wins moved Navy's record to 11-2 on the season, with just two more dual meets left during the season. The Wolfpack fell to 7-4-1 with the loss.
Navy scored extra-margin victories over the Wolfpack in four weight classes, including falls from Jonny Kane (Portland, Maine) at 184 pounds and from Chris Pogue (Chesapeake, Va.) at 197 pounds. Spencer Manley (Ooltewah, Tenn.) and No. 20-ranked John Cox (Grand Haven, Mich.) also scored major decisions at 141 and 149 pounds, respectively.
The match started at 174 pounds, where Matt Stolpinski won a hard-fought 13-8 decision over Rick Brownlee. After Kane and Pogue recorded falls over Jeremy Colbert at 184 and Mark Jahad at 197, senior heavweight Tanner Garrett, ranked seventh in the country, scored two takedowns in the third period to defeat Jainor Palma, 5-2, for his 33rd victory of the season. Palma, who lost for the second time in a row, fell to 20-6. 125-pounder Alex Usztics then recorded an impressive win with a 12-5 victory over NC State's Jeremy Hartrum. Usztics twice got back points against Hartrum to earn him the victory. At 133 pounds, freshman Joe Baker looked strong in the first two periods, then held on for an 11-7 victory over a strong Garrett Cummings.
After Manley and Cox won the next two weight classes by major decision, John Jarred and Craig Dziewiatkowski followed with decisions over Kody Hamrah and Obie Simpson at 157 and 165 pounds, respectively, to close out the 38-0 shutout.
