CARY, N.C. - NC State women's soccer (4-0) picked up its fourth-straight victory with a 2-1 win over visiting Delaware (1-1-2) in the final match of the Summitt Hospitality Invite, Sunday, Sept. 4. Two freshmen, Tami Krzeszewski and Lindsay Vera worked to provide the game-winning goal and junior Carol Tognetti recorded the first goal. Delaware's Alli D'Amico had the lone goal for the Blue Hens. NC State's Kim Selz earned her fourth win of the year and made five saves, while Delaware's Lindsey Shover posted seven saves and took home the loss.
Delaware put the pressure on NC State early, posting the game's first goal in the ninth minute. The Blue Hens' Alli D'Amico collected a pass near the center of the box from Caitlyn Germain, who was racing down the right side. It was the first goal NC State had given up in three previous games in nearly 300 minutes of action. But NC State fought back and used some key throw-ins from junior Megan Buescher to work into offensive sets. One of Buescher's long throws landed on the head of a darting Tognetti to score the tying goal at 16:11. The game was evenly played for the entire first half as both team's played offensive-minded. With NC State on top in total shots, Delaware held its presence and posted two strong shots, one by Germain was stopped by Selz that bounced up to hit the crossbar. Selz was there to collect the rebound. The Hens continued to test NC State's defense and tallied two staight shots following a corner kick by Germain. The Pack blocked one from Megan Millstone and Selz saved the second taken by Jamie Flynn to lock the score at 1-1 heading into the break. NC State held a narrow lead with six shots to Delaware's five and corner kick opportunities remained close with the Wolfpack's three and Blue Hens' two.
"I was really disappointed that Delaware took the early lead," said NC State head coach Laura Kerrigan. "But Delaware did an outstanding job today. Their keeper did a great job and made several key saves down the stretch. At half we knew we needed to make some adjustments and keep it simple. The setup for Tami's goal was easy and simple and we just took our time to get the good shot."
The second half saw NC State take over offensively. An inspired Wolfpack squad returned from the break to quickly tally six shots before midway through the period. Freshman Tami Krzeszewski recorded her first collegiate goal in the 65th minute after freshman Lindsay Vera threaded a ball through midfield to Krzeszewski dashing down the far side. Her goal boosted the Pack up 2-1 with just over 25 minutes remaining. The Blue Hens fired back as they created fifth-straight scoring opportunities within a five-minute span. To start, Delaware's Mary Beth Creed tried to find an equalizer when she took a corner with 18 minutes remaining and placed it inside the box, but the Pack's Selz was there to punch it out. Two other shots from Germain went high and wide. The fifth try was a shot from Melissa Kunisky on the near side and Selz was again there to record the save. NC State freshman Ashleah Dingle ended the Delaware offensive push with a shot in the 85th minute, but it too was stopped by the Hens' keeper, Shover. The Pack then rallied with four minutes to go, posting six solid shots. Krzeszewski hammered a shot just inside the 18, but it was blocked and freshman Mallory Schmidt was there to fire off the rebound, but it sailed just wide. Junior Jessica O'Rourke volleyed a loose ball and wheeled around for a shot that banged off the crossbar with two minutes remaining to keep the ball on the NC State side. Tognetti wrapped it up with a late shot with seconds to go that forced Shover to make one final save.
The Wolfpack will host Samford at 7 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 9, at SAS Soccer Park before hosting Oregon on Sunday, Sept. 11 at 1 p.m.
