
Wolfpack Women's Tennis Dropped by Maryland, 6-1

College Park, Md. - On Saturday, Apr. 16, the NC State women's tennis team fell to Maryland on the road in College Park, Md., 6-1. Freshman Elin Stahl Johansson collected a win at No. 3 singles for the Red and White, while freshman Julia Roach and junior Barbara Orlay collected a victory in doubles play. With the loss, the Pack dips to 9-12 (1-8 ACC) on the season, while the Terrapins improve to 10-10 (4-5 ACC).
To start off doubles, Roach and Orlay collected a very close opening match over Marianne Baker and Julia Graca, 9-8. No. 46 Maryland would then win the remaining tag-team bouts to earn the doubles point and slide into singles action with an early 1-0 lead over the No. 64 Pack. At No. 2 doubles, senior Danielle Stadelmann and sophomore Agustina Arechavaleta slipped to Neda Mihneva and Tamar Huppes, 8-6. Senior Carmen Torres and Johansson then lost to Ramona But and Masha Senic.
But, ranked No. 60 nationally in singles play, put hosting Maryland up 2-0 over NC State with a win at No. 1 singles against Orlay, 6-1, 6-3. At No. 2, the Terps' Baker took down junior Virginia Romero, 6-0, 6-2. The lone singles win for the Wolfpack came in the third singles slot, as Johansson battled from way behind after getting shut out in the first set of her bout against Jennifer Dent. Johansson collected herself and took the final two frames, winning the match, 0-6, 6-2, 10-5, to grab her ninth singles victory on the spring.
At No. 4, Maryland regained its momentum, as Mihneva knocked off Roach, 6-1, 6-2. In the fifth spot, Stadelmann fell to Subertova, 6-0, 6-0. In the sixth and final singles contest, Arechavaleta lost to Graca, 6-1, 6-2. Coming into the day, Arechavaleta had won two singles bouts in a row.
The Red and White will wrap up its regular season tomorrow, Sunday, Apr. 17, with a match against No. 72 Virginia in Charlottesville, Va. Following tomorrow's action, the NC State women's tennis team will compete in the ACC Championships. The annual event is being held at the Cary Tennis Center in Cary, N.C., and will take place Apr. 21-24.
