Gymnastics Finishes in Rare Tie Against UNC

Raleigh, N.C. - The NC State gymnastics team returned to home action Friday night, and scored a 194.475 in a dual meet against EAGL conference foe North Carolina. The Pack (10-3-1) and the Tar Heels actually pulled a rarity in college gymnastics, as both teams scored an identical 194.475 and finished in a tie. The tie is the first in the program's 25-year history for NC State. The two teams will have a rematch this Sunday afternoon at UNC.
The Pack started the meet extremely well, scoring a season-high team score of 48.900 on vault. Junior Kylah Bachman was NC State's top finisher as she finished first with a score of 9.85. Both sophomore Rachel Katz and freshman Leigha Hancock posted scores of 9.8 and tied for third. Also scoring for NC State were freshmen Heather Zolton (9.75) and Laurie Singer (9.7).
NC State moved over to bars, but had to count two falls and only scored a 47.700. Jones put together the Pack's top performance with her score of 9.825 and won her first career event title. Bachman was close behind with her 9.8 for second, and Katz scored a 9.75 to take third.
The Pack then matched its vault score over on beam, with a team score of 48.900. won her second event of the night, as she won beam with a score of 9.875. Senior Andrea Petrocelli scored a 9.85 for second, and Hancock was close behind with her 9.825 for third. Zolton scored a 9.75, and senior Jennifer Gray had a 9.6.
NC State would finish the meet strong, notching its highest team score of the evening on floor, a 48.975. The Pack got strong performances from its freshmen on floor, as the freshmen duo of Hancock and Kelsey Lee each recorded a 9.825 and placed third. Bachman and Katz were right behind with their scores of 9.8. Zolton was the final scorer with a 9.725.
Bachman came away with the all-around title, scoring a season-high 39.325 to win her first title of the year. Freshman Heather Zolton (38.450) and sophomore Amanda Jones (38.225) each competed in the all-around for the first time this season.
The NC State gymnastics team will next embark on a three-meet road trip starting this Sunday at North Carolina at 2:00 p.m.
