RALEIGH, N.C. - NC State and North Carolina won five matches apiece Friday night, but the Wolfpack got pins from freshman 157-pounder Kody Hamrah and junior 174-pounder Kevin Gabrielson to hand the Tar Heels a 21-17 defeat in Atlantic Coast Conference wrestling action at Reynolds Coliseum.
The match was the first conference bout of the season for NC State, which improved to 5-4 overall. North Carolina fell to 3-4 overall and 2-1 in the ACC.
UNC jumped to a quick 8-0 lead by taking the first two bouts. Bobby Shaw got a third-period takedown and just avoided a takedown at the buzzer to hand the Wolfpack's Garrett Cummings by a 3-1 overtime loss. At 133 pounds, UNC All-American Evan Sola won a technical fall over Jeremy Hartrum, holding a 17-1 advantage when the bout was stopped at the 5:53 mark.
NC State won the next five matches, then avoided any major decisions or pins in the final three matches to seal the victory. Jeff Breese got a takedown and a three-point near fall in the third period to record a 10-6 come-from-behind victory over Isaiah Britton in the 141-pound bout. At 149, the Wolfpack's Alex Hernandez began the third period with a reversal to take a 4-3 lead and added a late takedown to break a 4-4 tie enroute to a 6-5 decision over Chris Ramos.
Hernandez's decision cut the UNC lead to 8-6, and Hamrah gave the Wolfpack the lead for keeps by pinning Nick Royer at the 2:11 mark of the 157 match. The pivotal match of the evening from North Carolina's point of view was most likely at 165 pounds, where NC State's Ryan Nowicki's takedown with seven second remaining in the bout gave him a 5-4 victory over Garrett Atkinson. That lifted the Wolfpack to a 15-8 lead in the team scoring.
At 174, Kevin Gabrielson made it five straight wins for NC State with a pin of Tim Barbis at the 4:19 mark, extending the team lead to 21-8. The Tar Heels won the last three bouts, all by decision, to come up four points short of a victory.
Justin Dobies defeated the Pack's Jeremy Colbert 7-2 at 184 to cut the team score to 21-11, and NC State's Zach Garren clinched the team victory by dropping only a regular decision to David Daschiell, 7-2, at 197. Tar Heel heavyweight Spencer Nadolsky defeated Jainor Palma 5-2 in the final match of the evening.
NC State returns to action on Saturday with a 7 p.m. bout against Navy at Cardinal Gibbons High School.
