Raleigh, N.C. - The NC State men's soccer team got its 2004 season off to a strong start with a 5-1 win over visiting Brevard College Wednesday afternoon at SAS Soccer Park. After falling behind 1-0, NC State would go on to score five unanswered goals, including three goals in a span of five minutes early in the second half to put the game out of reach. Junior Federico Peria scored twice and added three assists to lead the way for the Wolfpack offense.
Brevard struck first in the 24th minute. Tarik Smith dribbled down the right side of the field and found teammate Shamari Ramsey unmarked in the NC State penalty box for the early lead.
NC State would first answer that goal, and then score the eventual game-winner just before the half. Sophomore Chris Wheaton used Peria's first assist of the day to get the Wolfpack on the scoreboard in the 34th minute. Peria then would score a goal of his own, just 57 seconds before the half, after a Chiedu Chukwumah clearance deep in Wolfpack territory led to a breakaway from Peria.
Peria's second goal of the contest came at the 58:47 mark, after junior Bryant Salter crossed the ball into Brevard's penalty box, and Peria calmly beat the keeper then a defender trying to cover the goal. Peria would return the favor to Salter less then a minute later, as he set up Salter's goal in the 60th minute. Freshman Ernesto Di Laudo capped off the scoring for NC State, using Peria's third assist of the day.
NC State ended the game outshooting Brevard 25-4. Jorge Gonzalez got the start in the Wolfpack goal and played 75 minutes, with Aaron Sanders playing the final 15 minutes, but neither recorded a save.
NC State was with out the services of two starters. Junior Aaron King and freshman El Hadj Cisse both sat out the contest with injuries.
The Wolfpack will return to action Saturday afternoon and take on St. Francis in the first game of the Adidas Wolfpack Classic. That game is scheduled to take place at 2:00 p.m. at Method Road.
