ST. LOUIS - Senior 149-pounder Jake Giamoni won twice in the wrestlebacks, but missed making All-America by one bout Friday at the NCAA Tournament. Giamoni was the highlight of the tournament for NC State, which finished with 6.5 points and was tied for 42nd after the second day of the three-day tournament.
Senior 157-pounder Scott Garren, who split a pair of bouts on Thursday, had to forfeit his second-round wrestleback bout for medical reasons, while senior 165-pounder Dustin Kawa won a pair of wrestlback matches before defaulting to Virginia's Tim Foley for the second time in three meetings with Foley this season. Kawa was called for an illegal hold, and when Foley was unable to continue the bout, Kawa was forced to default.
Freshman Jeremy Hartrum, who split his two bouts on Thursday, lost to Matt Valenti of Pennsylvania. Although Hartrum lost two of three bouts at the national tournament, he defeated a wrestler ranked 10th nationally, and both of his losses were to wrestlers who went on to earn All-America honors.
