The NC State women's soccer team fell to San Diego State, 3-1 in the second game of the San Diego State Tournament on Friday afternoon. NC State falls to a 1-2 record while San Diego State improves to 3-1.
The Aztecs scored twice in the first 26 minutes of the match. Junior Kim Castellanos (Escondido, Calif.) struck first in the 15th minute. Junior Sheila Dayog (San Jose, Calif.) fired a shot that ricocheted off the crossbar. Castellanos collected the rebound and knocked the ball into the Wolfpack goal.
Senior Michele Wagner (Clovis, Calif.) notched the second goal in the 26th minute. Freshman Erica Lopez (Vista, Calif.) flicked the ball on to Wagner off a Noelle Jouglet (La Mesa, Calif.) throw in. Wagner gathered the ball and fired on the Wolfpack goal.
The score stayed at 2-0 until late in the second half. San Diego State struck again in the 75th minute. This time it was freshman Amanda Swiader (Virginia Beach, Va.). Senior Beth Tinling (West Valley City, Utah) floated a free kick into the penalty area, where it was headed down across the mouth of the goal by Castellanos. Swiader flicked the ball past Wolfpack keeper senior Gretchen Lear (Springfield, Va.).
Lindsey Underwood (Princess Anne, Md.) tallied the lone Wolfpack goal, the tenth of her career in the 84th minute. Underwood worked her way through the Aztec defense and fired from 25 yards out. The ball flew past the outstretched fingers of Aztec goalie Stephanie Pearson (Los Gatos, Calif.).
The Wolfpack had several other great scoring opportunities but were unable to connect with the ball. Several balls rolled along the goal line in front of the Aztec net and one deflected off of the crossbar.
"We were creating lots of attacking chances, we just weren't putting them away," said head coach Laura Kerrigan. "They (San Diego State) finished extremely well and that was the difference in the game."
NC State will take on Cal State-Northridge on Sunday, Sept. 8, at 1:00 in the final game of the San Diego State Tournament.
