The NC State women's soccer team improved to 2-2 overall with a 4-0 dismantling of the Cal State-Northrige Matadors (1-3, 0-0) Sunday afternoon in the final game of the San Diego State Tournament. Twenty-one Wolfpack players notched playing time against the Matadors.
Junior Lindsey Underwood (Princess Anne, Md.) kicked off the scoring in the second minute of play. Freshman Erin Ardler (Greenville, N.Y.) stole the ball and fed it to sophomore Annika Schmidt (Welver, Germany) who was sneaking down the left touchline. Schmidt sent a through ball to Underwood who was streaking in from the right side. Underwood slipped the ball past Matador keeper, freshman Jen Jasper. The goal was Underwood's second in as many games.
The Wolfpack struck again in the 20th minute. Senior Adrienne Barnes (Clemmons, N.C.) and junior Katherine Warman (Coquitlam, British Columbia) worked together to steal the ball from the Matadors. Barnes then slid the ball to Warman from about 35 yards out and she fired on the Matador goal. Jasper was able to get a finger on the ball but was unable to keep it out of the net.
NC State scored their third goal with just four minutes left in the half. Senior Lauren Bendahan (Springfield, Va.) floated a corner kick into the penalty area. Senior Erin Bushey (Biglerville, Pa.) headed the ball down into the goal, for her second of the season.
Schmidt tallied the final score in the 55th minute. Ardler played the ball to Schmidt, who fired from 40 yards out. The ball rocketed over the head of freshman keeper Karen Comstock and into the upper right corner of the net. Comstock replaced Jasper in goal at halftime.
Wolfpack keeper senior Gretchen Lear (Springfield, Va.) saw little action in the game, tallying only one save. Lear left the game in the 60th minute and was replaced by freshman Lauren Georges (Chapel Hill, N.C.). While not having to make a save, Georges gained valuable game experience along with nine other Wolfpack reserves.
"I was really pleased with our effort, we really put the pressure on them (Cal State-Northridge), and we were able to finish," said Wolfpack head coach Laura Kerrigan. "It was a good win against a quality opponent."
The Wolfpack will take on Temple on Sunday, Sept. 15, at 3:30 p.m. at Method Road Stadium.
