Raleigh, N.C.--The #14 Tennessee Lady Vols (1-1) used two late goals to surge from behind and beat the Wolfpack (1-1) on Sunday at SAS Soccer Park in Cary.
The Wolfpack struck first on a goal from senior Erin Bushey in the seventh minute. Sophomore Annika Schmidt floated a free kick into the penalty area, and Bushey headed the ball past senior goalkeeper Ellen Dean. The goal was Bushey's first of the season, and the third of her career.
Just five minutes later, Tennessee was knocking on the door when senior Kim Patrick sliced through the Wolfpack defense and hammered a shot at the NC State net. Senior goalkeeper Gretchen Lear came up with an acrobatic save, the first of her four saves of the match.
In the 20th minute, Tennessee was knocking again. This time it was junior Rhian Wilkinson. Wilkinson collected the ball and fired a point blank shot. Again, Lear came up with an important save.
NC State held the lead, and managing to keep the Lady Vols at bay, until the 71st minute. Sophomore Lyndsey Patterson collected the ball inside the penalty area and fired towards the left side of the NC State goal. Junior Jaci Harper stepped in front of the ball, stopping the shot. However, sophomore Lindsey Wiest was there to get the rebound. Amid the confusion in the box, Wiest slid the ball into the NC State goal.
Tennessee would strike again, to take the lead 2-1, just four minutes later. Sophomore Kayla Lockaby sent the ball to Patterson who was at the six-yard box. Patterson took the pass, turned and knocked the ball past a charging Lear. Both teams would have several more opportunities, but neither team was able to find the net.
"Obviously we're very disappointed, to be leading against Tennesse 1-0 until the 70th minute," said NC State head coach Laura Kerrigan. "Mentally we switched to a defensive mentality and we were unable to switch back to an offensive mindset when we needed it most."
NC State will go on the road to face San Diego State at 1:00 p.m. on Friday in the San Diego State Tournament.
