RALEIGH, N.C. - Navy won six bouts - including a pin, a disqualification and a major decision - to defeat NC State in college wrestling Saturday night at Reynolds Coliseum. The Midshipmen, who defeated North Carolina earlier in the afternoon, improved to 9-6 for the season and returned to Annapolis with a two-match sweep on Tobacco Road. The Wolfpack fell to 6-7 with the loss.
Navy jumped to a quick 9-0 lead after two matches. Michael Bigrigg (20-12) took a 3-2 decision over Jason Gore (8-13) at 197, and 20th-ranked Steve Kovach (28-5) pinned Ngozi Collins (13-7) at 6:35 in the heavyweight bout.
NC State got on the scoreboard when George Cintron (9-6) defeated Sam Gray (17-26) by an 8-3 decision at 125, but the Midshipmen all but put the match away with wins in the next two bouts. At 133, Mike Simon (14-12) took an 18-10 major decision over Clarence Davis (1-7), and the Wolfpack's Ryan McCallum (6-9) was disqualified in the 141-pound bout after repeated warnings for stalling. Second-ranked Mark Conley (34-2) had a commanding lead in the bout at the time of McCallum's disqualification.
That gave Navy a 19-3 lead in the team scoring, and despite winning three of the next four matches, the Wolfpack was unable to get any closer than nine points with one match remaining. Jake Giamoni (12-11) took a 5-3 decision over Pat Lukanich (12-12) at 149, and Kevin Gabrielson (6-7) handed Adam Bones (17-10) an 8-3 loss at 157 to cut Navy's team lead to 19-9. The Midshipmen's Luke Lazzo (20-17) sealed the team victory with a 9-4 decision over Justin Parlier (2-3) at 165.
At 174, NC State's Dustin Kawa (15-6) defeated Mike Barikian (7-13) 6-3, and Barikian was penalized for unsportsmanlike conduct at the conclusion of the bout, costing Navy a point in the team scoring. That left Navy's lead at 21-12, and Travis Manion (10-10) defeated the Wolfpack's Jon Godwin (8-12) by a 7-2 margin at 184 in the final bout of the evening.
