RALEIGH, N.C. - Jake Giamoni took a 15-9 victory over Adam James at 149 pounds to give NC State an insurmountable eight-point lead with one bout remaining, and the Wolfpack went on to defeat Maryland 24-13 in an Atlantic Coast Conference wrestling match Saturday afternoon at Reynolds Coliseum.
The win snapped a four-match losing streak for NC State, which improved to 5-4 overall and 1-1 in the ACC. Maryland, which lost for the second match in a row, fell to 3-2 overall and 0-1 in the ACC.
The Wolfpack jumped to a big early lead and then held on as the Terrapins tried to rally late. Pierre Pryor (16-5 overall, 2-0 in the ACC) got the Wolfpack off to a 3-0 lead with an 8-2 win over Josh Weidman (16-3, 0-1) in the first bout of the match, and Dustin Kawa (11-6, 2-0) then won a 19-3 technical fall over Mark Reid at 174 to stake the Pack to an 8-0 lead.
Maryland's Jake Stork (23-4, 1-0) got the Terps on the board with an 11-1 major decision over Jon Godwin (8-9, 0-2) at 184, but NC State's Jason Gore (8-9, 2-0) downed Bob Vorhies (8-11, 0-1) 10-3 at 197, and Wolfpack heavyweight Ngozi Collins (11-5, 1-1) defeated Jeremy Duncan (4-5, 0-1) on a tiebreaker to give the Pack a 14-4 team lead. George Cintron's (5-6, 1-1) 19-5 major decision over Maryland's Matt Pandullo (7-6, 0-1) gave NC State an 18-4 team lead with four matches remaining.
Joe Guzzio (15-9, 1-0) took a bite out of the Wolfpack's lead with a pin of Clarence Davis (0-4, 0-1) at 133, pulling Maryland to within 18-10, and Brandon York (9-2, 1-0) made it 18-13 with an 11-5 decison over Jonathan Williams at 141.
NC State rallied to take the final two matches, however. Giamoni (10-9, 1-1) , normally a 141-pounder, moved up a weight and defeated James (17-14, 0-1) at 149, and with the outcome no longer in doubt, Kevin Gabrielson (5-5, 1-1) took an 8-1 decision over John Antonelli (7-9, 0-1) in the final match of the afternoon.
