Chapel Hill, N.C.--The top-ranked UNC women's soccer team overcame an early goal by NC State's Lindsey Underwood (Princess Anne, Maryland) to top the Wolfpack 4-2 in the ACC regular season finale for both squads. With the win, UNC improves to 15-0 on the season (7-0 ACC), while the Wolfpack drops to 7-9 overall (0-7 ACC).
NC State's two goals were the most allowed all season by the Tar Heels since UNC let in a pair of tallies against Tennesse in a 5-2 victory. UNC entered the match third in the nation in scoring defense, allowing just 0.43 goals per game.
The Wolfpack came out firing on all cylinders early in the first half as Underwood headed a redirection by Erin Bushey (Biglerville, Pa.) into the Tar Heel net at 1:02 of the first half to give the Wolfpack a 1-0 lead. Bushey and Lauren Bendahan (Springfield, Va.), who took the corner kick on the play, were credited with assists.
UNC then unleashed a four-goal barrage in 41 minutes as four different Tar Heels dented the Wolfpack net. At 9:21 of the first half, Anne Remy took a Jena Kluegel pass from the left side of the field and redirected the ball past NC State junior goalkeeper Gretchen Lear (Springfield, Va.) for the tally. Lear was in net for the first time since missing five games with a broken left pinky finger.
The second goal for the Tar Heels came at 29:41 of the period when Klugel took a pass from the right side of the Wolfpack box and shot the ball into the lower left corner of the net for a 2-1 advantage.
UNC would push the advantage to 3-1 in the 38th minute when Elizabeth Ball used a Danielle Borgman pass from Remy to score. The final Tar Heel tally of the night came just after halftime when Maggie Tomecka headed in a Kluegel corner kick at 50:09 to give UNC a three-goal lead.
The Wolfpack would not go quietly, however, as freshman forward Annika Schmidt (Welver, Germany) blasted in a deflected Kelly Blaggie (Clearwater, Fla.) shot to draw the Wolfpack to within two at 53:15 for the final margin. Blaggie claimed the assist on the sequence.
Lear had five saves in the loss for the Wolfpack.
