CONWAY, S.C. – The NC State (8-2) volleyball team fell to 21-ranked Indiana (7-2) in four sets Saturday afternoon in its first match of the Chanticleer Classic hosted by Coastal Carolina.
Freshman Britni Silver and sophomore Jordan Smith paced the Pack with a combined 27 kills on the afternoon.
Set-By-Set Summary
One: NC State established a balanced attack early in the match, getting key offensive contributions from Jordan Smith and Britni Silver to trade leads and tie the frame six times up to 14-14. Indiana then took control with a 4-0 run powered by back-to-back service aces, prompting a Wolfpack timeout at 14-18. Although NC State hit a efficient .348 in the set with 11 kills on 23 attempts, Indiana's .414 attack percentage and 3 service aces proved decisive as the Hoosiers closed out the opener 25-17.
Two: The Wolfpack surged back in the second frame, hitting .324 as a team and out-blocking Indiana 3–0. Britni Silver led the offense with six kills in the set. Tied 11-11, Talia Francom sparked a crucial breakaway with back-to-back service aces, and Jordan Smith added a service ace shortly after to extend the lead to 16-12. A block by Rebecca Ring and Francom helped hold off a late Indiana push, and Silver delivered the set-winning kill at 25-20 to level the match at 1-1.
Three: NC State jumped out to a 2-0 start behind an opening kill from Silver and a Hoosier error. After a tight battle to 6-6, Indiana mounted a 7-0 run, capitalizing on three service aces to force an NC State timeout at 6-11. The Wolfpack fought back with a 4-0 run of their own—highlighted by consecutive kills from Silver and Smith, followed by a Makenna Kowren service ace—to trim the deficit to 10-15. Silver and Smith paced the attack, but Indiana's .583 set hitting percentage prevented NC State from closing the gap completely. The Hoosiers regained the match lead after taking the set, 25-19.
Four: Clara Vondran opened the fourth frame with a service ace to give NC State an immediate 1-0 edge. Trailing 7-14, the Wolfpack rallied behind setting from Eva Long and consecutive kills by Rebecca Ring to cut the deficit to 11-14 and force an Indiana timeout. Libero Zuzanna Maciejewicz later sparked a late rally with a service ace followed by an attack kill to bring NC State within four at 19-23. However, seven team attack errors limited the Pack's momentum, allowing Indiana to close out the set 25-19 and claim the 3-1 victory.
