RALEIGH, NC – After 7 hours and 46 minutes of game time, 18 innings, and 746 pitches, NC State and Miami split the doubleheader Friday night, with Miami winning the first game 12-9 and NC State evening the series with a 13-6 victory in game two at Doak Field.

The victory was the 1,100th for head coach Elliott Avent as skipper of the Wolfpack. Avent became the only active head coach to reach that mark at a single school and just the 20th Division I coach to do so.

The Wolfpack (29-17, 11-12) got the win behind Cooper Consiglio (3-3), who tossed six innings of three-run ball, allowing three hits and three walks with a career-best nine strikeouts.

Freshman Christian Serrano had a big day in both games, collecting three hits and scoring twice in game one, then hitting his first collegiate home run in game two, adding three RBIs and three runs scored.

The Pack led 11-0 heading into the seventh inning, but Miami scored six to avoid the run-rule. The teams combined for 18 walks in the second game, as the Pack kept the Hurricanes at arm's length despite some trouble in the later innings.

Tristan Potts had his longest outing of the season, going two innings without allowing a base runner and recording two strikeouts. Potts came on in the top of the eighth with the bases loaded and no outs and proceeded to get a double play and a strikeout to stop the Hurricanes' comeback attempt.

Rett Johnson extended his hitting streak to 20 straight games, and Ty Head had a three-RBI night with two hits and a run scored. Luke Nixon went 2-for-4 with two RBIs and two runs scored, including two doubles, which now puts his season total at 14, leading the team.

The Wolfpack used a seven-run fifth inning to break the game open. The Pack scored its seven runs in the frame on only three hits. Head started the inning with a bunt single and reached third on a Sherman Johnson double. Brayden Fraasman hit a sacrifice fly to make it 5-0.

A hit by pitch and a walk loaded the bases. Drew Lanphere didn't see a strike and walked on four pitches to add another run. A Miami error off the bat of Rett Johnson brought home another, followed by another walk, this time by Nixon. Head, in his second appearance of the inning, recorded his second hit, scoring two and making it 11-0.

Two wild pitches in the bottom of the seventh scored Johnson and Nixon, once again making it 13-6, where it would finish.

GAME 1
In a four-hour game, NC State and Miami combined for 21 runs on 26 hits as the Hurricanes took the series opener 12-9. NC State fell behind 6-0 early but used an eight-run fourth inning to take the lead. They led 9-6 before Miami used a five-run seventh inning to go on and win.

Heath Andrews went 4.2 innings, allowing six runs on eight hits with five walks and no strikeouts. All six runs came in the first two frames.

Ryder Garino (3-3) took the loss after allowing a season-high six runs on seven hits, with one walk and six strikeouts. Garino gave up a bases-loaded walk, then a grand slam, to give Miami a lead they would not relinquish.

The eight Wolfpack runs in the fourth inning came from five hits, three walks, and two hit-by-pitches. All five of the Wolfpack hits were singles.

The series finale is set for tomorrow, Saturday, May 2nd, at 7 p.m. on ESPN2.
