NC State Unable to Contain UNC Offense

Â
UNC had 15 hits in the game, striking out only five times and hitting three home runs. NC State trailed by three runs after a five-run fourth inning, but the Tar Heels responded with a seven-run fifth to make it a 10-run lead.Â
Â
The Wolfpack's five-run fourth was sparked by Sherman Johnson, who extended his hitting streak to 14 games with a two-run RBI single before Brayden Fraasman's pinch-hit single drove in two more. Christian Serrano then brought in Dalton Bargo on a sacrifice fly for the Pack's final run of the night.
Â
Rett Johnson started the game with a single, reaching 25 straight games with a base hit. Johnson enters the final game of the regular season batting .400.Â
Â
The Pack had a plethora of opportunities, going 4-13 with runners in scoring position and 3-6 with the bases loaded. The Tar Heels excelled in such situations, going 9-19 and 3-4 with the bases loaded.Â
Â
NC State's offense came from across the lineup, with nine different batters recording each of the team's nine hits.
Â
Cooper Consiglio (3-4) went the first four innings for the Pack, giving up ten runs, five earned, on ten hits with three strikeouts.
Â
North Carolina starting pitcher Ryan Lynch was taken out in the fourth inning after giving up six runs on eight hits, with two strikeouts and four walks. Caden Glauber (8-0) got the win after coming in to pitch in the fourth and settling things down, allowing just two base runners.
Â
The Tar Heels came out swinging, homering on the first pitch of the game. They came back in the next frame with a five-run inning for the second consecutive night. The Wolfpack committed an error on a would-be inning-ending groundball with the bases loaded. UNC took advantage with back-to-back two-run doubles to give them a six-run advantage.
Â
The Pack kicked off the bottom of the frame with four straight singles from the bottom of the lineup, with the fourth coming from Drew Lanphere to get on the board. A second run on a groundout RBI from Rett Johnson was all the Wolfpack would come away with.
After a hitless third inning, the teams combined for nine runs on nine hits in the fourth. UNC put up four runs before the Wolfpack offense exploded for five of their own, cutting the deficit to three.Â
Â
The momentum shifted again as UNC responded with seven runs, including a grand slam. Wolfpack Julien Peissel went 2.1 innings, the longest of his career in a Wolfpack uniform.Â
Â
NC State will wrap up the regular season on Saturday, May 15th, at 2 p.m. on ACCNX. It will be Senior Day as the Wolfpack honors seven seniors: Dalton Bargo, Brayden Fraasman, Drew Lanphere, Wyatt Peifer, Danny Heintz, Julien Peissel, and Landon Carr.
