BLACKSBURG, Va. – For just the second time in program history, Virginia Tech took the series from NC State following a 5-4 victory over the Wolfpack Sunday afternoon at English Field.
The Wolfpack (27-16, 10-11) moves to 2-3 in one-run games this season and wraps a seven-game road trip 3-4, and is just 5-9 away from Raleigh.
NC State managed just six hits and was led by centerfielder Ty Head, who was 2-for-2 with a double and an RBI. Sherman Johnson had a three-RBI day following a bases-loaded double.
Rett Johnson scored a run and extended his hitting streak to 17 games, a season best for any Wolf Pack player. Chris McHugh reached base for the 25th straight game.
Virginia Tech scored the first run of the game after a leadoff double that came around to score without a hit, following a fly ball and a ground ball to third, allowing the run to score.
Griffin Steig for the Hokies held the Wolfpack scoreless through five innings, but the Wolfpack battled to take the lead in the sixth as the Pack loaded the bases and Sherman Johnson delivered with a two-out double.
Wolfpack starter Luke Hemric matched his career-long in innings pitched, going five and a third innings, allowing four runs on five hits with one walk and two strikeouts.
After the Wolfpack took a 3-1 lead, Virginia Tech responded with a three-run home run to take a 4-3 lead and end Hemric's day.
Anderson Nance came on with a runner on second and one out and got the final two outs of the frame to keep it a one-score game.
That one-score game became tied again following a Head double scoring Nixon from first to make it 4-4. Head was thrown out at third, but Nixon had crossed home plate before the out was recorded.
The Hokies once again responded and took the lead in the bottom of the eighth after the first two runners reached on a single and a ground-rule double. With runners on second and third, Mickey Ragusa came on. Ragusa got a fly ball to right field, but the runner from third just beat the throw home to make it 5-4.
Sam Harris (1-1), after throwing three innings in the opener and keeping Virginia Tech off the scoreboard, gets credited with the loss.
The Wolfpack will return home for the first time since April 12th and take on East Carolina at the Doak at 6 p.m. NC State will look to take the season series from the Pirates after defeating ECU in Greenville, 10-3, on April 14th.
