NC State Falls to Wake Forest in Series Opener

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – After taking a 1-0 lead in the first, Wake Forest scored 22 unanswered runs, including a seven-run second inning, to beat the Wolfpack 22-1 Friday night at David F. Couch Ballpark.
NC State (25-13, 8-8) totaled five hits and struck out 12 times, matching its season high. Two of the five hits came from Ty Head, who drove in the lone run for the Wolfpack. Luke Nixon had a hit and scored the Wolfpack's run, while Rett Johnson has hit safely in 12 straight games.
The Wolfpack left 10 runners on base and was 1-7 with runners in scoring position.
The Demon Deacons had two big innings, a seven-run second and a 10-run sixth. Wake Forest hit six home runs in the game and had 16 hits.
The Wolfpack scored its 27th first-innings run of the season after making Wake Forest starter Chris Levonas throw 34 total pitches, as Head drove in Nixon with an RBI single. The lead didn't last long, as the Demon Deacons tied the game with a leadoff home run.
Wake Forest took the lead following a seven-run second inning. The Demon Deacons had four hits, three of which were home runs, including a grand slam.
Heath Andrews didn't make it out of the second, finishing his night having allowed eight runs on five hits, with three walks and four strikeouts.
Six pitchers followed Andrews out of the bullpen, as the Wolfpack staff combined to throw 205 pitches. Only 12 of the 22 Wake Forest runs were earned.
This was the first time under head coach Elliott Avent that the Wolfpack had lost by 20 or more runs.
The Wolfpack will look to even the series in game two, which will be at 4 p.m. on Saturday, April 18th, on ACCNX.
