NC State Opens NCAA Championships with Pair of Top-Five Relay Finishes

ATLANTA, GA. - The No. 7 NC State men's swimming and diving team opened competition at the 2026 NCAA Men's Swimming & Diving Championships with back-to-back podium finishes in both relays on day one at McAuley Aquatic Center, held March 25–28.
The Wolfpack's 200 medley relay squad of Quintin McCarty, Daniel Diehl, Aiden Hayes, and Drew Salls kicked off the meet in session one. Competing in the morning prelims, NC State secured a spot in the top eight before finishing fifth overall with a time of 1:23.23.
Freshman Max Carlsen made his NCAA Championships debut in the 1650 freestyle. After automatically qualifying at the ACC Championships, Carlsen competed in the evening finals and placed 12th overall with a time of 14:44.57, earning second-team All-America honors.
NC State closed out day one with a strong showing in the 800 freestyle relay, finishing fifth overall with a time of 6:07.20. With his performance across both relays, Daniel Diehl earned first-team All-America honors, marking his second such recognition of the night.
The Wolfpack added two new names to its list of All-Americans, as Hudson Williams and Max Carlsen each earned their first career honors in the 1650 freestyle and 800 freestyle relay, respectively.
Looking Ahead
After the opening day, NC State sits in fifth place with 61 points, just one point behind fourth-place Arizona State. The Wolfpack returns to action on day two with the 100 butterfly, 200 freestyle, and 200 freestyle relay on deck. Preliminary heats begin at 10 a.m., followed by finals at 6 p.m.
