RALEIGH – NC State women's basketball earned a huge win on Sunday against Syracuse, 82-69. The Wolfpack won its 10th straight game against the Orange.
Both teams are now tied in the league standings at 11-5 and NC State has improved to 18-9 on the season.
After seven lead changes in the first five minutes of the game, the Pack used an 18-0 run, while Syracuse was held in a six-minute scoring drought, to create separation. At the half, the Pack led by 17, 46-29. Three players were in double digits by the half, led by 15 from Zoe Brooks.
Syracuse came out in the second half with a 7-0 run. With the Orange outscoring NC State 24-20 in the third, the Orange cut the deficit to as little as six, 55-49, with 4:38 left in the third. That was the closest the Orange could get, as NC State finished the quarter strong on an 11-4 run.
In the fourth quarter, the Pack held Syracuse to 18.2 percent shooting from the field (4-of-22) and 12.5 percent from beyond the arc (1-of-8), to close out the game with an 82-69 win.
NC State won the battle in points off turnovers (22-16) and points in the paint (38-22) and outrebounded Syracuse 43-36. The Pack assisted on 16 of its 29 baskets and shot 48.3 percent from the field (29-of-60).
The Pack had four players in double digits, led by Brooks and Khamil Pierre's 20-point games. Pierre led the Pack with 25 points off an efficient 10-of-15 from the field along with 15 rebounds for her 18th double-double of the season. Brooks tallied 20 points off 6-of-10 from the field and 6-of-8 from the free throw line. The duo is one of two tandems in the ACC with three 20-point games this season (tied with Notre Dame's Hannah Hidalgo and Cassandre Prosper).
Pierre's 22nd consecutive game in double figures is the third longest streak by an NC State player in a single season this century. Tilda Trygger also added 14 points and seven rebounds and Zamareya Jones had 14 points and a career-high matching eight assists with just two turnovers.
POSTGAME QUOTE
Head Coach Wes Moore Opening Statement:
"I'm really proud of our kids and the way we came out to start the game. Obviously, we had a tough game Thursday night on the road, a physical game, and they were off. They had a bye, so I was concerned about our energy, stamina and being able to hang in there, but I thought our kids did a great job there. In the second half, we got a little loose with the ball and turned it over a little too much. We gave up some offensive boards. Coach Nikki said it was because I was too positive at halftime. I told her we're safe then because that's like a total eclipse. It only happens about every 10 years or so. So it won't happen again, I guess. Again, a great effort and there are still a lot of things we can clean up and learn from, but I'm glad we're learning from a win. It's going to be good to be able to give them a day off and catch our breath."
UPCOMING
The Pack will host Wake Forest on Thursday, Feb. 26 at 7 p.m. on the ACC Network Extra. NC State will host Senior Day to honor five of its student managers.
