RALEIGH, N.C. - NC State men's soccer (5-5-3, 1-3-1 ACC) recorded its second consecutive shutout with a 3-0 win over Mercer (0-10-3, 0-3-1 SoCon), Wednesday night at Dail Soccer Field.
Coming off a 3-0 victory over No. 4 UMKC on Sunday, the Wolfpack carried that momentum ito a quick turnaround against the Bears.
NC State controlled possession for the majority of the match, outshooting Mercer 19-2.
Malcolm Rangon struck first, scoring in the eighth minute, netting his first goal in the red and white off an assist from Tyler Caton. Rangon struck against 14 minutes later, doubling the Wolfpack's lead and giving NC State a 2-0 advantage heading into halftime.
Six minutes into the second half, a handball in the box awarded NC State a penalty kick. Caton converted to extend the lead to 3-0 and record his second goal of the season.
Neither team found the back of the net for the remainder of the match as NC State secured its second consecutive clean sheet.
19 different players saw the field for the Wolfpack, including three who made their first appearances of the season. Hayato Takayama earned his first start as a member of the Pack, while freshman goalkeeper Gabe Lamphere recorded his second consecutive clean sheet.
